Standing in the gap for retired racehorses providing a safety-net through rehabilitation, education, & placement in qualified, caring homes.

Dewey is a beautiful 15 yr old bay roan pacing gelding with black points and a beautiful head. He won $30,000 racing several seasons and was gelded and retired at age five. Dewey had been ridden on trails exclusively until about 3 years ago, in a snaffle. Since then he has been very lightly used under harness; of course, he excels at that! He has retained a very soft mouth and is easy to rate. He pulled an antique cart with metal bound wheels and even the loud crunching noise on the gravel didn’t bother him. Dewey also pulled a sleigh in the winter. He has not been under saddle much in the past 3 years. A few weeks ago, he went on a trail ride through the woods, through water and over some small jumps. Dewey does seem to like to jump. He has good form over fences, and spectacular scope, but an unconventional approach! He does not seem to want to buck, etc., and he stands readily when asked. He had only a few minor spooks on the trail ride and is very forward and willing. He has extremely comfortable gaits; lately, he has been trotting a bit more than pacing. See part two for more details.
Dewey likes to be handled very quietly and gently. He will turn his rump in the stall when startled, but he has never offered to kick. He is just a bit unsure of people. However, he turns around readily for a treat. He is responding to treat training, and is learning how to “shake hands”. He can be a bit difficult to catch in the field, but he is getting better at that, too. In hand, he is a real gentleman, very easy to lead and work with and stands well for the farrier and the vet. He is sound and healthy, and an easy keeper. Dewey has been out with one mare recently, and he had previously been out with one gelding in a boarding situation. He cannot be in a mixed herd (mares and geldings) as he can be extremely aggressive and protective of the mares, so a home with only one other horse would be best for him. Dewey is being placed from his home in Westerville, Ohio, just North of Columbus. Please email Joanne Hodges sqfarm@copper.net or call her at 614-855-7890 to discuss Dewey.
