2002 Standardbred gelding “Alaagator”  was adopted by Eva Smith in March, 2012 along with fellow Standardbred Flash Drive.

Eva reports: ” I adopted “Alaagator” with Flash Drive in March 2012. A friend of mine fell in love with him, though not an experienced rider, Gator takes great care of him. This is Alaagator’s first camping trip at Timber Ridge Horse Campground in Jamestown, TN, with Mike riding him. He also camped at Knott County, KY along with Flash Drive. Love the versatility of the Standardbred and how they take everything in stride like they were born doing it. Thank you New Vocations.”

2005 Standardbred “Flash Drive” was adopted by Eva Smith in March, 2012.

Eva reports: “My Standardbred “Flash Drive” arrived from Ohio March 22, 2012. We had a few issues at the beginning but didn’t give up, he has turned out to be a great friend and dependable trail horse. This is a picture of his first overnight trail ride at Knott County, KY the first weekend in May. Thank you again New Vocations.”

2008 Thoroughbred mare “Ms Firelady” had 5 lifetime starts and last raced on 6/13/11. Firelady now called Piper, was adopted in July, 2011 by Hunter Allen and her family.

Hunter shares their story:  ” Everyone I knew told me it was a mistake to consider adopting an off the track thoroughbred (ottb), and that thoroughbreds “were crazy”.  But I knew enough to know that thoroughbreds do tend to be a bit hotter than other horses, but not ALL thoroughbreds are. Some horses are braver than others, some are not as brave. But every horse is different and that’s what they discovered when we adopted Piper.

Piper was pretty timid when we brought her home and wasn’t interested in people or horses. I took some time doing other things besides riding, like sitting out in her pasture, grooming her, hand grazing her, and tried a couple  different types of ground work.  Eventually, Piper realized I was not going to tack her up and make her work every day and that I was really a friend. She started to trust me. What an amazing feeling.

Every day we grow closer together, she now enjoys being ridden and gets excited when she sees me coming. She has bonded with the horses in her field and she is the bravest horse I have ever seen in my life! She has filled out and is very happy. Nobody ever guesses she is only 4 and an off the track thoroughbred.  She has really changed every ones outlook on Ottbs.
Piper is now thriving in her new career as a Jumper and a friend. She has so much courage and tries her hardest. We are planning to start showing this summer, and just taking our time and enjoying it.
She also has made a fabulous trail horse! She went on her first trail ride with me and two of my best friends and their horses and did absolutely amazing!

I love Piper and I am so happy New Vocations brought us together! They do an amazing thing. Lots of people just send their failing off the track thoroughbreds to slaughter. I’m so glad this fate doesn’t await Piper or any of the New Vocation horses and never will. Give them a chance.”

Bonus Point is a 2005 Thoroughbred Gelding that was adopted by Victoria Bennett and Heidi Rockhold in December, 2010. Bonus Point had a total of 18 lifetime starts, earning $8,912 and last raced on 10/3/09 at Turfway Park.

Victoria reports: “We adopted Bonus Point “BP” from New Vocations in December 2010 as my Christmas present. Since we have had him, BP has found his new niche and is progressing nicely into a Jumper. In the 2011 show season, I showed him in hunter divisions at local shows and he did very well. This year we decided to chance things up and he is now being trained as a Jumper. We have very high hopes for him and he is coming along very nicely and learning how to use himself very well. He is a great young horse, I love working with him. He is a fantastic horse and he learns new things very quickly. We also trail ride and he is a blast to ride no matter what we are doing. He is a very sweet horse and very trusting. He gets along well with other horses and is a sweetheart to everyone he meets. He always has the cutest expressions on his face and he loves to give kisses. He will lick your hair if you’re not careful and he loves to be groomed.

BP gets turned out with my two other OTTBs, including CV Perilous who we adopted from NV this year, and my mom’s Saddle gelding and they all get along great. Adopting a horse from New Vocations has been one of the best experiences of my life. He was the first one we adopted from there and since then I have had two others as well, Determined Again and CV Perilous.”

For such a quiet and unassuming horse in his stall, this guy is all business and is very serious about his job under saddle. He is rather simple to ride and very agreeable and quiet minded, so he will make a very fun project for someone. Currently Bilan is working on moving off leg and bending, but already holds his own frame, swings through his back and is light in the bridle. He can keep a steady rhythm with the help of light contact and drives well from behind making him a naturally more forward horse. Nothing seems to faze him and no antics under saddle.  He looks forward to turnout with his buddy and is respectful to handle on the ground. Just an all around good guy!

Bilan had 24 starts with a record of 3-5-4, earned $16,659 and last raced 3-29-12. He was retired from racing because his owner said he became nervous at the track and they wanted a different life for him now, maybe one he would like better than racing. He has no apparent injuries and has no vices and should be suitable for any discipline.

Bilan is by Birdonthe wire out of Simply Exciting by Lil Tyler.

Yankee Rooster is the total package!! This guy is stunning and super quiet under saddle. He is very willing and should excel in anything you ask him to do. He  would especially make a nice hunter equitation prospect. Rooster has long and floating  gaits and picks up his leads easily. He currently is jumping small fences and loves riding in outdoor and indoor settings. Not only is he wonderful to ride, Rooster stands quietly for baths, enjoys turnout with his buddies, and is a pleasure for the blacksmith to shoe.

Yankee Rooster ended his racing career on 12/8/11 retiring sound and happy. In his career he earned $24,000 with 1 win, 1 second, and 5 thirds. As you can see his last race was in December which has given him plenty of time to settle into the farm life.  Words cannot say enough about this amazing horse.  If you’re looking for the next  horse, he is your man!

Bill is a big guy with a sweet personality and has a very wise face.  His racing record proves that he has been there, done that and now deserves a life of leisure with someone who wants a pleasure or trail horse.  He is a big lofty mover, is smooth to ride, and has an old show hunter feel to him.  He is a funny mix though in that in familiar surroundings he is brave and fairly confident, but in unfamiliar surroundings he is timid and really looks to his person to tell him everything is okay and he then will do what you ask of him.  He just needs someone who he can trust, is quiet, confident and steady, and his self confidence will grow as we have already witnessed in the time he has been here.

Bill has really started to shine under saddle as he is figuring out his new life.  He has manners and does not bolt or buck, but was nervousness his first few rides and then we could see the light bulb moment when he understood his new job and from then on has gone right to work. With more time and training, he will make a very nice partner. Bill is easy to handle on the ground and groom and is quite the social butterfly with the 2 geldings in his pasture and the surrounding pastures.

Bill had 49 starts with a record of 7-5-12, earned $225,360 and last raced 2-20-11.  He had down time and was turned out prior to coming to our facility and he has no vices.

Crafty Bill is by Crafty Friend (Crafty Prospector) out of Im Blessed by Polish Numbers.

This flashy guy has all the right moves to make a lovely lower-level dressage horse!

A true sweetheart that loves attention and will place his head in your lap for as long as you are willing to scratch his face.  He will even talk to you trying his best to get you to come down to his stall for that attention and those big eyes draw you right in. Nedd is a very confident horse both on the ground and under saddle.  He has a forward way of going, a natural rhythm and is currently learning to maintain that rhythm on a loose rein now and working on bending.  His uphill build and way of going makes him very suitable for dressage, but he may also enjoy trail riding as a career since he is a brave horse.

On the ground Nedd is easy to handle, but can occasionally give us his opinion of things because he is a very wise old soul.  Currently, Nedd goes to turn out with 2 other geldings and he is in the middle of the pecking order, but he is the one who will get the other two to play halter tag with him.

Nedd had 33 starts with a record of 3-2-2, earned $33,162 and last raced on 1-8-12.  He was retired due to lack of competitiveness and he had raced long enough.

Oldblindnedd is by Marquetry out of Gwynedd by Old Trieste. Nedd has no vices.

Quick Shooter definitely packs a punch with his gorgeous looks and halter horse size hind quarters.  Kind and willing, Shooter is people orientated and very “user friendly”. Good to handle in all respects, he enjoys turnout with other geldings  and has also babysat (and tolerated) a few of the youngsters. With no vices, Quick Shooter is the perfect addition to any family barn and would be ideal for anyone looking for a trail horse  that can pop an occasional log  that he may encounter or for someone wanting to do pleasure riding on the flat.  He has nice paces and an easy way of going and is rock solid out on the trails having encountered dogs, machinery, vehicles and horses out in the pastures. People often contact us asking for the perfect companion and pleasure horse and this is him. He aims to please and hits the target every time – he is a low key, minimal fuss kind of horse with high dollar looks and a temperament that is priceless!

He does have a rather large ugly right front knee as a result of an infection in it at one time that resulted in scarring. However it has been like this for a considerable amount of time and does not seem to impact him in any way and should not interfere with any future use if limited to the flat. He has always been sound while at the facility even with 8 hours of turnout and daily riding. He really is a super nice horse that is a tremendous amount of fun to ride and be around and he is eager to find his new adoptive family.

Shooter had 17 starts, placed in 7 of them and earned $82,794 at the mid level tracks. He last raced 9-9-11 and was retired due to lack of competitiveness.

Quick Shooter is by Red Bullet (Unbridled) out of Symphonious by Hennessy.

The event is open to all riders, English, Western, Gaited or any other riding style you prefer.

Guidelines: There are 3 divisions. Teams of 1 to 3 riders follow a flagged cross-country course, with the goal to complete the course in as close to the ideal time as possible. Riders may choose to jump the obstacles or go around them. Course distance will not be announced until the awards are presented – HOWEVER the distance is between 3-6 miles.

300 show up to the Thoroughbreds For All  Educational Symposium in Lexington, Kentucky

The evening celebrated the versatility of the retired racehorse while raising $10,000 to support two worthy charities.

On April 28th Hall of Fame Jockey Chris McCarron and two time World Champion event rider Bruce Davidson lead an all-star line-up to promote retired Racehorses for second careers at the Thoroughbreds For All event held at New Vocations’ Lexington facility. The event presented by New Vocations and the Retired Racehorse Training Project attracted over 300 Thoroughbred enthusiasts from twenty different states. The evening consisted of dinner and three hours of educational sessions focused solely on understanding and working with retired Thoroughbred racehorses.

Highlights from the evening include two-time World Champion Bruce Davidson alongside Rolex veterans Dorothy Crowell and Cathy Wieschoff and veterinarian Dr. Steve Allday evaluating the potential of recently retired racehorses available for adoption through New Vocations. Bruce Davidson set the tone by saying, “The Thoroughbred horse has the best temperament of any breed.”

Hall of Fame Jockey Chris McCarron and two of his students from the North American Racing Academy demonstrated how racehorses are ridden and how jockeys develop skills that all equestrians should learn. Further demonstrations included working with retired racehorses at various stages of training as well as a special appearance by the 1994 World Equestrian Games silver medalist and 1998 top-placed American at Rolex, Molokai, a Kentucky-bred racehorse.

Eight Thoroughbreds available for adoption were used in the presentations, including recently retired Advice, a 2009 Kentucky Derby contender who is now in New Vocations retraining program. Crowell and Wieschoff did demonstrations with their project Thoroughbreds who have already successfully competed at different levels.

“Our goal for the event was to promote retired racehorses for second careers through providing an evening of educational yet entertaining sessions led by industry leaders of both the Thoroughbred racing and equestrian world,” explained New Vocations Program Director Anna Ford. “We definitely reached that goal and more. We have already received requests for future events.”

NTRA Senior VP Bryan Pettigrew said, “We brought 10 guests to the Thoroughbreds For All event, including some current sponsors and some potential sponsors. Our intention was to continue to educate them about Thoroughbreds and their careers in racing or showing. This event did just that.”

Thoroughbreds For All was sponsored by AmWest Entertainment Group LLC, Gulfstream Park Thoroughbred After-Care Program, and Lubrisyn. All proceeds went to New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program and Retired Racehorse Training Project; both are 501(c)3 charitable organizations.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program

Founded in 1992, New Vocations has grown into the largest racehorse adoption program in the country and has facilities in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Tennessee. The program’s mission is to rehab, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses. In 2011 the program rehomed 429 retired racehorses. Working directly with owners and trainers who need aftercare for horses leaving the track, the program currently receives horses from more than 30 racetracks. New Vocations has a sound adoption system that is proven to move a large number of horses in a relatively short period of time. Retired Racehorse Training Project

The Retired Racehorse Training Project is an effort to increase demand for Thoroughbred ex-race horses for pleasure and sport through public events, clinics, videos, training publications, and internet tools. Its Retired Racehorse Trainer Challenge recently drew 3,000 people to its finale in Pennsylvania, and its web site attracted 18,500 individual users in the first two months of this year. The RRTP Board of Directors is made up of Thoroughbred advocates from both the racing and sport horse industries, and is led by Maryland-based trainer Steuart Pittman. Wasabi Cat turns heads and oozes class with his chrome, beautiful classy dished face and solid stature. Fantastic to handle in all respects, he is good to clip, shoe, bathe, catch etc  and has no vices.  A son of Tabasco Cat out of an Alysheba mare, Wasabi raced 22 times and retired in August of 2010 due to a tendon tear. He had stem cell treatment at the time of the injury and again in March 2011. At this time, his tendon is 75% healed  and he is able to go out daily on restricted turnout – a recent ultrasound and results of a full soundness exam are on file and the vet is available to discuss these with suitable potential adopters. Due to overwhelming need for stalls for incoming horses, Wasabi Cat is available at this time with his fee waived to an approved home where he can continue his rehab and any interested parties would need to have suitable facilities – he will not at this time be able to be turned out in large fields, with other horses or for extended periods of time although he has done all of the above in the past. He will also require front shoes.

His prognosis is good and he is a cute mover and will eventually be suitable for dressage and other flat work.  Jumping him in the future has not been ruled out although it would only be at lower levels once completely healed. This is an exceptionally classy horse that is well put together with a pleasant nature and upon completion of his rehab, he should enjoy a long and prosperous second career. Applications and questions are welcomed. 

This gorgeous 4 year old gelding is now available for adoption and we are very excited about his future potential. After arriving at the facility, he was given substantial downtime to recover from gelding and get him accustomed to turnout with other horses. He has taken everything in his stride and has now been living out 24/7 with one older gelding coming in just to eat and be worked.

Standing 16hh, he has a substantial build and a beautiful way of moving with good even paces which have cadence and balance along with a nice topline.

After just 3 rides back under saddle, he was jumping small obstacles and has been trail ridden alone all over the farm encountering farm machinery, running horses in pastures and dogs.

Quiet Pride was used in both the confirmation and ridden portions of the recent Thoroughbreds For All event and was declared by 2 time World Champion Bruce Davidson to be a very nice young horse with ideal show horse potential – he would be ideally suited for hunters. He handled being in front of a crowd of 300 people at close quarters relatively well and at the end of his session was jumping 2’ 6” and doing basic lead changes.

Quiet Pride has tremendous potential with the right person that has good hands and can ride with a lighter contact. He has no vices, is good to clip, shoe, bathe and catch and will require a home where he can have at least one older gelding as a buddy – he is not suitable for solo turnout or for turnout with mares.

Having this big gorgeous horse in anyone’s barn is bound to be a pleasure. Sultry at just 8 years old has had significant downtime from the track and adjusted well to his new life as a pleasure horse. He was used in the confirmation portion of the Thoroughbreds For All event this weekend and behaved very well in front of a crowd of 300 people at close quarters and received some very complimentary remarks from the professional judges!

Standing 17hh, he is a headturner for sure and has been worked daily by the Lexington facility’s intern. He lunges nicely in both directions and is good to clip, shoe, bathe etc. With no vices, he has been used to babysit younger horses which he is phenomenal at and has been living out 24/7 coming in twice a day to eat and be checked over.

Sultry has been extensively ridden in both indoor and outdoor arenas and on trails and has never shown any malice and goes nicely and consistently requiring at least an intermediate rider.

He would be ideal for someone that likes to do a lot of trail riding or perhaps pursue some lower level dressage. He is suitable for living outside however he will still require grain and must have at least one companion horse – he is not suitable for turn out with mares.

What an amazing horse this mare is. She came to our program after 3 years off while having 2 foals and she went right to work like she had never been out of training.  The more rides she has, the more she is starting to stretch down, loosen up and use her back as she works and a steadier, more consistent rhythm is starting to develop as well.  One thing she didn’t need any work on is her natural ability to do smooth, effortless flying lead changes which shows she has balance and good previous training.  She is the spitting image of her sire Mineshaft including being just as solid bodied and pretty.

Dee is quiet and easy to handle and has the mature confidence that tends to come with having been a broodmare.  In turn out, she is in the middle of the pecking order and will leave if conflict occurs rather than being in the middle of it.  She had no issues transitioning from full time turn out to being back in a stall and actually seems to like being able to come in after a few hours of turn out with her friends.

She had only 1 start, earned $148 and last raced at Belmont on 10-12-08.  She retired sound, but just wasn’t competitive and since coming off the track, she has had 1 foal in 2010 and 2011.  She has no vices.

Feline Delite is by Mineshaft (A.P. Indy) out of Feline Story by Tale of the Cat.  Her sire Mineshaft was a late bloomer and in 2003 at the age of 4, he had 9 starts with a 7-2-0 record, earned over $2.2 million that year earning him Horse of the Year honors. His total race record was 10-3-1 in 18 starts and first year at stud his stud fee was $100,000.

Tetanic is a wonderfully expressive mare who seems to really enjoy life and looks at everything as a new adventure. She is confident, but will light up when being praised for being such a good girl and that carries through under saddle as well. Along with being confident, she is also soft in the bridle, has adjustable gaits, nice rhythm and tries very hard for the rider making her a pleasure to ride. With more weight, muscle tone and time, her stride should lengthen and she will go from the pretty girl she is to a more elegant mare.

It took Tetanic a few days to adjust to turn out outside, but now she and her pasture buddy are best friends and both really enjoy their time in the pasture together. Tetanic is very respectful and easy to handle and leads quietly to turn out despite the boys’ best efforts to get her attention as she walks by them. She is smart to ignore them.

Tetanic was a hard working girl with 58 starts and a record of 11-8-3, earning $169,665. Her last race was on 10-11-11 and last work out at Belmont was on 11-15-11 after which she was retired and given several months off. She has no vices.

La Tetanic is by Band is Passing out of Cynosure by Youmadeyourpoint.

Chantal is an elegant, sensible young filly. Naturally a balanced mover who already moves freely through her shoulders and drives from behind. She has proven to be very athletic and sound both physically and mentally. Chantal was not raced as a 2 yr old but went on to race 8 times as a 3 yr old. She was retired in December due to a mild tendon strain, that can’t even be seen now.  Chantal has been fully rehabbed and is 100% sound. She is being ridden 3-4 times a week, and turned out daily with no problems. Chantal has a soft mouth, and responds to leg cues. It would not take long for her to learn a new career. She has a great start just needs more guidance and consistency. Chantal should be suitable for any disciplines including jumping.  We have started her over small fences and she really seems to enjoy it.  Never refuses or rushes.

Her current adopter reports: Scarlet has become a very personable horse. She is a healthy and happy young mare who is quiet and steady under saddle, although she is spunky when she’s fresh. She’s only 6, after all.  For the past two years, she has been ridden 3-5 times per week, mostly just on the flat. She does know leg yield and shoulder-in, and is familiar with ground poles and cavaletti. She’s been ridden bareback and bitless with no problems at all. She longes well, has been ridden by myself and a 9 year old child and has been remarkably well mannered. She has been ridden out in the hay fields and on trails, and while she does get a little insecure when presented with something new or scary, she has never offered to run back to the barn or throw her rider (she’s done this bitless, too). I personally feel as though she would be a great horse for an adult amateur or pony club rider, but she also has enough spunk to be fun for barrels or gaming, although I’ve never tried it with her.

Scarlet has been living outside 24/7 for the last two years. She does crib lightly, but only at feeding time, and can be a little stand off-ish with new people. I suspect she has had some rough handlers in the past. Her only other vice would be how girthy she is. Otherwise, she stands nicely for grooming, clipping, bathing, etc. The only time she ever misbehaved for our farrier is when he pulled her shoes. She doesn’t love the vet, but has never been unmanageable, and really, what horse does love the vet?

She is truly a low maintenance horse who only wants someone gentle to love her and treat her well. My sincere hope is that she finds someone who will love her and give her what she needs to continue to live a happy life.

Personality A++ is an understatement for this beautiful, stocky built gelding. He is very quiet, willing, and moves and responds to leg pressure well. He has the mind to excel in many different disciplines including hunter jumpers. King is an average mover but would shine at unrated shows. He is relaxed, quiet in his stall, quiet in the washrack and paddock. King loves giving kisses and showing attention to everyone in the barn.  He has no vices and no apparent injuries. These are just a few positives about this gorgeous fella that make him a great prospect.

Not only is he a pleasure to be around, he retired on 10/9/11 after having a good racing career. He had 27 lifetime starts with 5 wins, 3 seconds, and 1 third with earnings of $105,250. 2008 Thoroughbred “Forum” adopted January 2012 by Cecilia B. Forum had 10 total starts, earned $52,343, and last raced on 1/6/12 at Gulfstream Park.

Cecilia reports: Forum is doing fantastic! He had a name change to Wesley and has put one a few pounds. I’m riding him about 3 days a week. He’s going nicely in the arena, learning to leg yield and how to pick up both leads. We also go on the trails which he seems to enjoy very much. I took him down to the beach the other day with friends and he did wonderful. Lots of wind and some reeds to walk on and he acted like it was no big deal. He’s a very confident young horse, calm about most situations and intelligent.

I am looking forward to taking him to his first show next month! I have turned him out with my 9 year old gelding a few times and they seem to do just fine though Wesley seems to want to play and Aidan has never been very playful. Everyone who see’s him tells me how impressive, shiny and well mannered he is. He has a way of making himself known without being really in your face. Always nickers to me and comes right over when I come to his gate…..as a matter of fact when he see’s the truck coming he’s usually at his gate waiting for attention by the time I have parked and gotten out. In one of the photos I sent you will see him playing with a little girls hair, that’s my 5 year old. From day one he has loved to do that and that continues to be their “thing”. I thank you for your program, I thank Lisa Molloy for her hard work and diligence in placing horses into the right home. I can’t wait to share what we accomplish by our next update!”

This quiet, unassuming guy holds a great secret of how good he was on the track in just 2 short years of racing. From a rough start of tripping and losing his jockey in his very first start, to winning 3 of his races by 6 ½, 10 and 12 lengths, he was often the pace setter and always showed good speed.  The fact that he was the odds on favorite in over half of his races shows he was a favorite at the track just as he is a favorite with us at our facility.  After all, he did sell for $125,000 as a yearling.

Mobo is such a kind horse both to handle and to ride and is also a great babysitter for our more difficult boys.  He quietly controls the pasture without kicking or pushing the others around and soon his pasture mates are calmly grazing nose to nose with him.  Amazingly he has been off the track for 3 ½ years and when he started back under saddle with us, he went right to work like he hadn’t missed any time away from work.

Mobo will need to gain muscle and build his stamina and flexibility back up, but he has a great, sharp mind and it won’t take him long to get back into a program.  An intermediate level rider and up is what he currently needs, but in time he should be suited for a more novice rider when he has more training under his belt.  Very easy to handle on the ground, respectful, and loves attention which makes him fun to be around and will make someone a great lower-level hunter, dressage or pleasure horse.

Mobo only raced as a 3 and 4 year old, had 9 starts with a record of 4-0-1 and earned $118,730.  His last race was on 9-1-08.

“I cannot believe it’s been a year already. I actually had to look up my papers to make sure – Ha! She’s fitting in just fine in our family, although she still tries to change the pecking order making herself number 1 on the family list instead of number 3! She recently got her shoes back on from the winter off and is starting her lunging routine once again. She’s got good weight, glossy coat, good feet and wonderful appetite.  She also gets monthly injections of Adequan for her knees and biotin supplements for feet. Plus she gets tons of peppermints everyday for just being a Saint. She’s really a sweet mare, very gentle around kids (lets them pull on her nostrils), but she definitely has a bubble space for adults. She knows she’s big, likes to be number 1, but accepts my directions. For now, anyway – Ha! Thank you so much for allowing me to bring Saintly into my family. She brings such joy and I am lucky to have her. I’ll send more pics later when we’re up and riding so you can monitor her progress. Keep up the great work you do in finding these horses loving homes. Best of luck for 2012. May it be the best year yet!”

Dream location truly is a dream to ride.  He is a nicely aged man that has seen and done all!  He will make a great trail or pleasure mount for most any riding level.  We pulled him straight out of the pasture threw a saddle on him and away we went.  He takes everything in stride and is more than happy to please.  He needs to get back into shape which shouldn’t take long and he will be your trail horse dream.  You can ride him with a nice rack or at the trot whatever fits you best.  He is shedding out nicely those dapples will be coming out soon and catch anyones eye.  He is great to turn out with all horses, and seems to be an easy keeper.  Dream Location last raced in 2010 and has been a turnout babysitter for horses on and off the track with hopes from his owner to ride but she just doesn’t have the time.  He raced a total of 232 times, and a record of 1:55.0 at the pace with a total earnings of $99,226.  He always gave is all when he raced and cannot wait to do the same under saddle.

Sweet, loving, affectionate, big hearted, kind eye and cute build are just a few of the words that describe this amazing horse. Small Pair is a horse you will fall in love with the minute you meet her. You can do anything you want with her, especially in her stall and she will just put her head down and love every second of attention. Small Pair doesn’t just have a sweet personality; she is also quite the fun little girl to ride. With her flashy feet movement and smooth flowing canter, she would for sure excel as a hunter/jumper prospect.

As you can see in the pictures, she is a little on the thin side and could use some extra pounds which will also help her to fill out as well. She has only been at the farm a little over a week and has already calmed down and acclimated to turnout and riding around the farm. Since coming off the track, she has a small “rundown” on her left front ankle. This is totally superficial and will heal in no time. We are currently applying a healing cream everyday which is helping the healing process along. This does not affect her riding at all but to keep it clean a set of polo’s would be handy to use until it is fully healed.

This sweet mare ended her career on March 15, 2012 with 17 lifetime starts having 4 wins and 3 seconds with earnings of $42,976.00. This girl is definitely going to be a straight forward project and a loyal friend for life.

He may not be the real Dr. McSteamy from the cast of Grey’s Anatomy but he is certainly just as handsome and will steal your heart away.

Dr. McSteamy is a great example of a well rounded Standardbred. He is a fast learner and a pleasure to be around. When working with him in the barn, he stands nicely in the cross ties and loves to be brushed. He even let a toddler brush him with no problem. Saddling was not an issue for him either. He wasn’t afraid of the saddle, cinched up easily, and bridled just as easily.
Mounting was just as easy of a task for him. He stood quietly and calmly while analyzing what was going on. He didn’t mind the weight of a rider or the sight of one on his back, just awaited his new task eagerly.
Under saddle, he will be a pro in no time. He seems to really enjoy his new career and will relax into being a very nice horse. He started out a bit anxious but within minutes had stopped pulling and relaxed on to the bit. He has a lovely frame when he drops onto the bit. As he finds his balance with a rider on his back, his gaits will continue to steady and smooth out but he is already very responsive and adjustable. He seems to be unflappable undersaddle, as you will see in the video, he happily trotted through the puddles with no fight on the first try. We even rode him outside of the arena for his first ride and he took everything in stride and was easy to handle.
At this point, he would be best suited for an intermediate to advanced rider until he is more certain about his new job. He is sound for any discipline but takes to everything so well that he should be very steady on the trails and is cute enough in a frame to excel as a show horse.

Fresh Heir arrived at New Vocations quite thin this winter, so we’ve held off posting him until he gained weight.  24/7 turn out on lush spring pasture has him coming around nicely, now.  Fresh Heir raced 118 times over 8 yrs and earned $145,000!  He’s been owned and trained by the same connections his entire career.  They retired him sound two yrs ago, when he was no longer competitive.  He was turned out at his trainer’s farm before coming to us in February. 

Fresh Heir raced on the pace, but always need the hopples to hit a gait.  Without them he trots all the time.  And what a sweet trot he has; low going, efficient, and smooth.  Haylie broke Fresh Heir to ride and shares these comments, “Fresh Heir is one of the most gentle, forgiving Standardbreds I’ve had the pleasure to transition. You could ride or walk this guy through fire, and he wouldn’t blink an eye. I put a beginner with a wobbly seat on him for the video to show how forgiving and easy this guy is. He has a nice slow western jog but will trot on out if preferred.  With a little more riding he could soon be lopeing. He’s so easy that while videoing, I told his rider to drop the reins, and he crossed a creek with no hands. Stick him behind a  horse on the trail, and he will follow along. Just make sure to stop and let his SLOW walk get caught up with the “normal” horses. Fresh Heir walks along the trail as if he is in NO rush to get anywhere…ever.  He is gentle in the stall and really came around to realizing he was a pet now; getting treats and being loved on. He stands to be mounted and dismounted and stands well to be saddled and bridled. This guy would be suitable for ANY level of rider.. As long as you can say whoa and pull side to side you are set for a nice relaxing ride!”  I ask Fresh Heir’s former trainer if he thought the gelding would be a different more spirited horse once he was fat again.  The trainer said, “No. He was always docile.”

So now, this special fellow is ready to adopt, and I’m confident he’s going to be a real blessing to the person that opens their heart and home to him.

Tiki Tai is a classy, very well bred daughter of The Panderosa, the sire of two Little Brown Jug winners, several nice sires, and a multitude of good broodmares.  The Panderosa is a beautiful stud and is known for stamping his offspring with his lovely head and long neck.  I knew Tiki would be pretty when I heard her breeding.  Tiki raced two years on the pace but simply wasn’t profitable.  Her kind trainer and conscientious owner have graciously given her the opportunity to have a new vocation as a pleasure horse.  She has all the credentials; youth, manners, temperament, soundness, and beauty to fulfill someone’s dream.  Tiki went straight from the track to Haylie’s barn.  

Haylie shares, “Tiki is a very well rounded young mare with a bright future. She still has some growing physically and mentally but she has star potential for many disciplines.  Undersaddle, Tiki is still learning where to put her long legs, but she gets better with every ride. She is trusting and never back talks.  And though she doesn’t like getting her toes dirty, she will do it if asked. Tiki has awesome driving manners. She hitched the first time (since being raced) Perfect! She stood still and patiently while I got in the cart and walked off peacefully. She had both a nice slow trot and extended trot. 

Under saddle Tiki is just as nice.   She has a lovely trot on a relaxed rein, however, when ask properly and collected in the bridle she will rack.  The latter could become her primary gait if her adopter chooses to develop it, otherwise she has a very balanced, fluid trot.  Tiki stands quietly to be mounted and dismounted. She will cross water and logs with ease.  She leads, follows or rides along in the middle on the trails.”  Tiki is a tall 16h mare and is just turning four.  She should mature 16.1-16.2h, plus add a lot of bulk.  Currently, Tiki is enjoying 24/7 turnout in a lush pasture with another mare.  She gets along well with her friend and the horses on all sides.  She is easy to catch and pleasant to have around.

Wow! Talk about attitude and ego!  What a powerful self image!  This fellow is the Fonz of the horse world!  In 45 years of raising standardbreds and over 1500 through New Vocations, I’ve never seen such a handsome, captivating Roman Nose! Artie is absolutely mezmerizing! And he knows it.  I can imagine all kinds of people fawning over him during his two years at the track. He only won one race and never went very fast, but in ‘Big Boy Artie’s mind, he was a champ.  Now to be honest, Artie might not have reached his potential, but then, again, maybe he did.  Each year after a half a dozen races, Artie would go a little ‘off’ in the left front and get a nice vacation.  Multiple vets and tests could never identify it.  But after some R & R, he’d train back and race a few more times, before the mysterious soreness would show up.  Artie is fortunate he had a kindly trainer and very conscientious owner who gave him the benefit of the doubt and put him on a trailer to New Vocations that went straight to Haylie’s barn.  She shares, ”

Society Artist is a very handsome, flashy gelding, and he knows it! This guy is full of himself! Artie has a big puppy dog personality and is the first to greet you with a neigh when you open the barn doors. He will stick his head out his stall and say “yes” till you come pet him. He is tidy in the stall and keeps himself clean.  Artie thinks he’s a lady’s man and will try to keep any mares to himself, so he does best turned out with the guys instead.

Artie has great ground manners and will naturally park himself out. He longes both directions and was free lounged over ground poles. Artie rides with the best of them. He does trot undersaddle and was learning to really round out and give to the bridle. He has an extremely natural canter for a standardbred and cantered a couple times undersaddle. All were extremely smooth and graceful. This guy would excel in many disciplines. Artie was a champ out on the trail.  He loved the water and would probably lay down in it if you let him. He is very attentive always looking around to see what will happen next.  He has to make sure he doesn’t miss anything!  Artie drives just as well as he rides. He oozes class and looks quite regal. He sets up very nice and pulls very gracefully.”  Shortly after Haylie got Artie, she wrote in her status report, “I LOVE this little horse!  If I had the extra ‘horse’ money, I would keep this guy and show him all year!”  I can only say, “Viewer discretion advised.  To look further is to risk losing your heart….. and adding another horse to your family.  Here is his video link in case it doesn’t show up below:  

This horse surprises us every time we watch him. Mugger has a plain but unique look to him in his stall, but is more impressive out of his stall. He moves much better than his build indicated by the way he can get his hind under himself, lifting his front end and moving through his shoulders. He is very cat-like in his body type and movement as you watch him go and then add to that his athleticism, and he’s a hard horse to miss.

Mugger likes attention and loves to be groomed and because he enjoys the time and attentions he receives, he will make a very nice trusting partner for someone. He is currently going to turn out with 2 other geldings and is in the middle of the pecking order getting along well with both of the boys.

Mugger had 27 starts at the upper level tracks, earned $11,035, and was retired due to lack of competitiveness with his last race being 4-21-11. He has no apparent injuries, tight legs, and will be suitable for any discipline for an intermediate level rider and up. Mugger has no vices.

Mugger is by Weekend Cruise (by A.P. Indy) and out of Thoughtful Girl ( by Mixed Emotions).

This sweet girl had a bit of a slow start with us but has blossomed into a pretty mare with a kind personality and is an absolute pleasure to be around. She just needed time to let down, gain weight and re-balance  and is now back to work. With each ride, Coaster is becoming more confident and less nervous under saddle showing she has a good work ethic and wants to try very hard despite being a bit worried about her new job. She really is a very kind, quiet-natured mare that likes people and attention, is a pleasure to work with and does best with quiet praise that boosts her confidence. With more time and relaxation, her trot and canter will improve in both length of step and rhythm. She already can drive and swing from behind because she gets her hind end underneath her.

She is currently going to turn out with 1 other mare and they have become buddies after being unsure of each other the first few times out together. Coaster is very quiet in her stall, has no vices, and no apparent injuries making her suitable for any discipline. She had 55 starts with a record of 12-9-10 and earned $122,764. Her last race was on 10-1-11 and certainly earned her retirement from the track.

Solid, strong and athletic are just a few ways to describe this gelding who shows a lot of potential to be a great athlete in his second career with the help of a confident, experienced rider who can push him and challenge him to rise to the occasion. Even though he may come off as very self assured, every once in a while he lets us see that he isn’t as confident as he pretends. In leading him to turn out he has occasionally glued himself to his handler’s side when going past something he’s unsure of. Knowing when to push and when to praise him will be the the secret to this horse and in return he has the potential to be a great partner.

Zooger has a nice trot, but his canter is his best gait with an easy rhythm to it and he actually tends to be a bit on the lazy side. He has already shown us that he can learn quickly as well. Zooger likes attention and being groomed and is easy to handle on the ground. As for turn out, he loves his time outside, but since he was gelded last year as a 5 year old, he needs a more passive turn out buddy and can not go out with mares.

Zooger had 20 starts with a record of 6-4-4, earned $182,972, and his last race was on 9-17-11. He was retired from racing due to lack of competitiveness with clean legs and no apparent injuries. He has no vices and is up to date on most of the vaccinations.

This amazingly talented, muscular guy is for sure the next big show star. “Cat” is a flashy mover, with a beautiful upright shoulder and solid build. He is an all-around fun guy to be around. He drops his head to have his bridle path cut, stands like an angel for the blacksmith, and absolutely loves root beer barrel candies! His trainer absolutely spoiled him and told us that those are a must for him to have every day!

Cat has no unsoundness issue at all and is all class.  He was donated to our program because he was not very good at loading in the starting gate. However, don’t let that mislead you; he walks on the horse trailer like he does it every day! His first day off the track and at the farm, he was super quiet and relaxed to ride and has proven to us that he will acclimate to new settings very well. This strong built gelding is ready to move onto a new career in eventing or hunter jumper prospect. If you are looking for a superstar that will catch people’s eyes in the show ring this is hands down your guy! UPDATE:  Cat has been started over small fences and is doing well.

Even though Cat is 7, don’t let his age shy you away as his racing career was not lengthy considering his age. Ending his career on March 10, 2012, He had 56 lifetime starts with 7 wins, 5 seconds, and 10 thirds earning him $83, 570 in his career.

This horse’s eye and expression tell you exactly who he is. Very self assured when he knows his job, but will still look to the rider for praise even though he acts like he doesn’t need it!  With every ride, Hoppsey has shown us that he is a quick learner which is not surprising since he has a good brain.  Since he had 8 months off, it will take some time to rebuild muscle and stamina before asking him to take on any serious training though.

Our rider can already rate his canter and he will stay at the pace you set him, extending the canter and then coming back to an easy canter as asked.  He is not quite there yet at the trot, but if he can do it at the canter, a steady rhythm at the trot should be no big deal to learn. Balance naturally isn’t an issue for him, but until he gains more muscle it is harder for him to hold himself in a frame and balance up.  He is easy to handle and will stand and watch you as you groom him as if to keep an eye on you to make sure you are doing it to his standards!   It is always fun to watch his mind work.

He is currently being turned out with one other gelding and will play halter tag with him, but he and his buddy are best friends. He has no vices and should be suitable for any discipline after he is back in shape.

Hoppsey had 14 starts, had a 5-0-1 record and earned $111,580.  He retired after his last race on 6-2-11 at Belmont and had 8 months of turn out before coming to our program.

Hoppsey is by Victory Gallop (Cryptoclearance) out of Star de Lady Ann by Star de Naskra.  His sire was a champion older horse and classic winner of over $3 million in 17 starts with a record of 9-5-1.

Seriously Mate also known as “Mate” around the barn is a beautiful lady that is correct in so many ways! Her muscular build, sweet disposition, and quarter horse type movement make her a definite eye catcher! She is even dappled all over from head to toe. Enough cannot be said about this diamond in our barn. She is new to our facility and coming off the track she has settled in very comfortably. Not only is she light in the mouth, she has a smooth floaty jog which would make her suitable for pleasure riding, local shows, and even English/western pleasure. A rider cannot help but love her even stride, and with her solid build, and substantial shoulder, she has potential to excel in a variety of disciplines.

Mate is currently being turned out in her own paddock where she is turned out next to mares and geldings. Since she just arrived we are slowly acclimating her to turnout with other horses and we are confident she will do just fine as she loves sticking her nose over the fence to play with her friends.

Her last start was on February 10, 2012, ending her career with 16  lifetimes starts at which she won one race, had 2 seconds and 2 thirds earning $23,230. Don’t look Mate by she is definitely worth taking a chance on and adding her to your barn.

Personality plus is an understatement for this boy!! Pleasure is a tall, dark handsome boy with a very soft, confident expression. This horse is one of the classiest racehorses we have seen at our facility yet. He is currently working on flat work with a training aid. He has a natural high head carriage which shows promising dressage potential. Pleasure would also excel in foxhunting, eventing, or even jumping. He has a lovely natural gallop stride that covers the ground effortlessly. This may just be the next upper level STAR! Not only is he wonderful under saddle, he has excellent ground manners and will do everything you ask of him. He lunges on command, stands for the blacksmith and loves his turnout time. His favorite friend is his turnout buddy as these two are always goofing around. Pleasure loves to play halter tag with his pasture buddy. He is always missing his halter at the end of the day, but never his friend!

His racing career alone is phenomenal. Horses like him only come around every so often and his legs would make you think he was just a baby that never raced. In his career he had 96 lifetime starts with 18 wins, 17 seconds, and 17 thirds. He was quite the money maker retiring with earnings of $315,622 with his last start on February 9, 2012. If you are looking for a classy, sound, all around horse you don’t need to look any further because Arpleasure is your man!

This eager and athletic boy is a must have! Bissix is super kind, super willing, and has this adorable innocence about him and has truly been a dream to work with. His favorite thing is to give you a hug with his neck curled around you every time you walk into his stall. If it were up to him you would be in his stall all day giving him love and him giving it right back!

The right amount of suspension combined with a long even stride makes us think we could see eventers take a double look at this guy. Bissix rides quietly in the indoor and outdoor ring and just as well in the open field. He would make a great foxhunter or even event prospect. You can take this guy anywhere and he will give you 100%. He definitely aims to please and loves having a job. Bissix stands quietly for the farrier, ships like a champ, and loves laying in the sun in his turnout. His last start was on February 16, 2012 ending his career with 11 total starts, 2 wins, 2 seconds and earnings of $64,311.

2011 Standardbred Endurance Award Winner Announced

Blessing is definitely a blessing in our barn. She is a quiet mare that loves to go on trail rides and is an all around well mannered fun horse. She did pretty well in her racing career earning $63,620 with 2 wins, 3 seconds and 3 thirds. Her last start was on November 4, 2011, so she has had plenty of time to settle into farm life. Blessing would make an excellent horse for trail riding, paper chase, and fun shows. She has great ground manners and loves as much attention as you will give her. You can ride her all day long and she will do whatever you ask of her. She stands quietly for the blacksmith, to get a bath, and has all around wonderful manners. If you are looking for a horse to just ride around and have fun with this is your girl.

What we know is that Mywife has gone from Youtube sensation to just plain phenomenal in the riding arena showing amazing potential under saddle. This super cute 5 year old mare has shown a talent for learning quickly and with the right rider/trainer combination, the sky is the limit!

Although petite, just like she was at the track, she is all heart and has a strong work ethic. She is extremely sweet and kind with not a hint of malice. Turned out daily with mares, she has also lived with geldings and does well with either. Exceptionally good to clip, bathe, shoe etc, she even stood untied while braided. She enjoys human interaction and loves being made a fuss of and having the odd mint. She lunges nicely in both directions and has 3 nice solid paces with good cadence.

Under saddle, she has been awesome. She has always been a very forward type of horse but ridden with soft hands and very little contact, she will come up under her self and start to reach for the bit of her own accord and gets better and better with each ride. She has never refused to do anything asked of her and has never bucked or misbehaved in anyway. However she will require a more advanced rider that can stay off her face – riding her with a constant heavy contact at this point in her training would not be beneficial. She has been trail ridden and started over ground poles and although she has slightly bumpy ankles from her time at the track, she has no injuries and no limitations. She has considerable dressage or eventing potential.

She has been seen to crib at feed times or if stalled for long periods such as inclement weather. This mare is capable of many things with time and consistent training. It is tremendously gratifying to see her continually improve with each ride. Wife raced several times after her winning race, but was then retired due to lack of competitiveness. She had 18 starts, placed in 8 of them, won $69,180 and her last race was 7-28-11. She was adopted out prior to Christmas however she was returned last month as her adopters were moving out of state and were unable to take her with them.

Can you say wow?? Holiday Trip is the complete package and riding him is as relaxing as being on vacation – retired Thoroughbreds don’t come much easier than this to ride!

Holiday Trip is a stunning 16.2hh bay gelding that turns heads and incites excited comments wherever he goes. A star at the track, he raced 27 times winning nearly $175,000. He retired in 2009 as he was no longer competitive and since that time, he has been in a private home where he was ridden 3 times per week by both his owner and their trainer.

Holiday Trip lunges nicely in both directions and is good to clip, shoe, bathe etc and will stand untied or in cross ties. He has no stable vices and is a kind affectionate horse. He has been on both individual and group turnout and does well in either situation. Under saddle he is exceptionally well behaved and would best be described as a packer – he is happy to go around in the arena on a loose rein and is cared for and ridden daily by the Lexington facility intern Morgan who thoroughly enjoys him.

Holiday Trip would be ideal for a rider looking for something that is further along than a recently retired horse and has the ability to do a bit of everything at the lower levels – although sound and without injury, he does not have the movement for higher level competition. This horse is not a candidate for going barefoot and has always been stalled.

Run with Sue is a gentle girl and wants so much to please. She is a real sweetheart and has no vices.  Sue enjoys her daily grooming, stands and drops her head to trim her bridle path and will stand in the wash stall. She is nice and quiet under saddle and is currently walk, trotting, and cantering with no issues. She has also been out on the trails and takes everything in stride. She is very curious about her surroundings, but is not a spooky horse. Sue does have old superficial wounds on her back ankles, but they do not affect her joints or the way she moves at all. Sue is looking for a best friend that will spoil her and give her lots of scratches. She is suitable for any discipline but seems to just want to stay slow and easy so hunter/jumper, a kids 4-H project, trail riding, dressage, and even paper chases she would enjoy most.

Run with Sue last raced 01/7/12 and had 19 starts. She was retired because she was no longer competitive. Her fee is low due to the fact she is on the thin side and could easily gain another 100lbs to be up to good weight. Sue is part of the PA HBPA New Vocations program. We are so happy to announce the pending arrival of former 2009 Derby runner Advice to our re-training facility in Lexington, Kentucky!

Following in the footsteps of 2008 Derby horse Z Fortune who was adopted out from New Vocations in May, 2011, the 6 yr old bay gelding has been donated to New Vocations so that he may be re-trained for his new vocation as a riding horse.

I Lift My Eyes last raced 12/29/11 and retired sound with 24 starts. Her breeding takes her back to the famous Seattle Slew and Roberto. “Eyes” has had the whole winter off and is ready to get started in her new career. “Eyes” is part of the PA HBPA New Vocations program. Fancy Francine is a beautiful well put together mare. Like her name she is a fancy tall solid mare with good bone.  Francine looks more like a Warmblood cross. This sweet quiet mare has a nice way of going and would make a good hunter/jumper.  She already carries herself nicely, is fairly balanced and will be a delight to retrain into any career you choose. She is quiet enough that she could even work well for an experienced child that is ready to move up to a larger horse.Francine has been turned out with other horses and is great. She has no vices in or outside her stall so she really is a dream to handle. Francine is completely sound, has nice clean legs, and has no apparent injuries, so she should be suitable for most disciplines including eventing. Francine has already been out on the trails and ridden around the farm with no problems.

Benny is an 8 year old gelding, bred in Ireland and raced in England both on the flat and over fences. He was then shipped to the US and raced over fences here. He had a mild suspensory issue and was retired at his owner’s farm for several years where he has lived out 24/7 without shoes. He is sound and has been ridden both in the arena and on trails. He is good to clip, catch shoe, bathe, groom etc and has been body clipped without any sedation. Benny has no stable vices and has had his stall cleaned while he is present and also been blanketed while eating. He is sound for all pursuits including low level jumping however he is green under saddle. He enjoys human interaction and has been fed treats by children.

Benny however is extremely aggressive with other horses. He cannot be turned out with other horses, he cannot be stalled next to other horses if they can touch each other – neighboring stalls must have solid walls and he cannot share fence lines with other horses except mares. Due to this fact, Benny cannot be ridden in the company of others.
Currently he is living out in a field across the lane from other geldings and is quite content. He has been hormone tested and is NOT a cryptorchid. Benny has never shown an aggression towards people, only other horses in particular other geldings and is used to cats, dogs and children.

He requires a home where he can either be a pasture pet or with someone that can work around his limitations. He needs an experienced home and an advanced rider and recognizing the fact that he will be difficult to place, New Vocations will pay his shipping expenses to an approved suitable adoptive home however in the event that the adopter wishes to return him, they will be liable for his return shipping expenses. His adoption fee is waived.

“Z” is an awesome guy with a goofy personality. He loves to be groomed and will even pick up a brush in effort to help.  Not only does he have a great personality, but he has the looks too. He is like the linebacker of Thoroughbreds. He is a thick, solid guy and would easily make a nice gentleman’s horse. “Z” has an quiet way of going and would excel as a  trail horse. He currently walk, trots, and canters and keeps a nice steady pace. He seems to prefer going slow. “Z” has been turned out with other geldings and gets along great with them. He would enjoy a buddy that also likes to play. Z

Bullseye last raced 11/17/11 with 32 lifetime starts. He was retired due to a bowed tendon. He has been rehabbed and is ready for his next career. “Z” was a good racehorse winning $165,000. He definitely has heart and will make his next partner happy. “Z” is best suited for trail riding, 4-H project, paper chases, low level foxhunting, dressage or any other flat discipline. If you are looking for a fun, goofy best friend, don’t look past Z Bullseye, he will put a smile on your face.

Herman is a pretty cool guy with his slick dark coat and playful personality. He has no vices and loves to play with the other horses when turned out. Herman is working well at the walk, trot, and canter and has even been out on the trails. He is a brave boy who wants to learn and would be fun project. Herman has a fancy way of going and should excel in any discipline. He has no apparent injuries and should be sound for jumping disciplines including eventing.

Herman’s soldier last raced 01/20/12 with 31 lifetime starts. He retired sound and was no longer competitive as a race horse. Herman would rather be showing off his gorgeous self in the show ring.
