Mahogany Hall stamps his offspring with size and a great, easy personality and this mare is no exception. Fruit Fly is easy to handle and be around and has been progressing quickly under saddle. On the ground, she is easy to take to turnout and handle in general. She loves to be groomed and fussed with, standing stock still enjoying her one-on-one time with someone.

Under saddle, she has gone from a little nervous to really starting to understand her new job. She still needs to work on her balance at the canter in the indoor, but is smart and will break to a trot when she is unbalanced and then picks the canter back up again when asked. Because the indoor arena is much smaller than the racetrack, horse often have to learn how to balance in the tighter corners. With the way she carries herself in the front end and gets her hind end under her, she would make a nice Dressage, Event or Hunter prospect.

Fruit Fly is currently going out with 2 other mares and if the alpha mare pushers her around, she will defend herself, but she doesn’t start anything. When she first came, she would call for anyone because she did not like going out alone, so she will need a turn out buddy. Now that she has not called out to any other horse including her turn out group.

Fruit Fly had 38 starts, earned $20,721 and her last race was on 12-16-11. She was retired from racing due to lack of competitiveness and has no apparent injuries and no vices.

Little Fruit Fly is by Mahogany Hall out of Moral by Mehmet. Her sire Mahogany Hall had a very respectful career placing in 14 of his 20 starts and earning almost $700,000. He ran in 11 graded races, including the Kentucky Derby, the Breeders Cup Classic, won the Whitney Handicap (G1), placed second in 2 and third in 1 of his graded stakes races.

Dynameius is being placed back up for adoption by his current adopter Cristin. Below is Cristin’s description of what Dino has been doing while in her care.

Dynameius is a 6 year old, 17H (slightly over) bay with lots of chrome, big bodied, solid legs and a good brain.  Dino was restarted correctly and slowly; the first year was spent teaching basics and learning to lunge with and without side reins, leg yields and canter leads.  This past year I amped up his training and really started teaching him to jump and teaching him more collection in dressage.  Like most OTTB’s his weakness is the canter and as many know, that takes at least a solid year or more of work to get them to really collect and sit instead of leaning on the bit, he does however jump courses (up to 2′9) without problems and has very nice clean flying lead changes.  Dino knows and is solid at shoulder in, almost solid at haunches in, now does half passes to the left and right and yesterday learned to do a canter half pass to the right.  Good in the contact, but will lean if not corrected early, otherwise very even, moves well under himself and up and over his back.  Very good paces with a really nice over stride in walk and all three gaits are comfortable to sit and he does not jump you out of the tack like some TB’s can.  Very laidback on trails, quiet and dependable goes English or western and has crossed creeks, hopped over logs and been around deer, turkeys and other native wildlife.  He is a compact horse with a strong short back and sloped hindquarters that tell me he can really jump and has the potential to be a very high level jumper or eventer.  Great brain on this guy, he is a thinker and can be cocky, but one reminder and he settles back in to his routine.

Last October he did a hunter show and for the first time did a course with changes and was amazing, he was quiet did everything I asked and even got a 5th place in the flat class, I was very proud of him.  He also went cross country schooling in August at Percy Warner Park in Brentwood TN, we did some beginner novice, a few novice and he did the Training level water jumps in and out of the water and never batted an eye, very bold and very brave on xc.  He can also turn on a dime and is very handy to use when herding my horses in, I just throw a western saddle on him with a fulmer snaffle and he will sit and turn around himself and can really slide as well.

He loads, clips, bathes, ties stands for farrier and vet and is currently shod all the way around with pads on front (due to rain and gravel here) he could go barefoot behind if no gravel is around, but I wouldn’t recommend taking his fronts off.  He was scoped back in 2010 for ulcers and was found to have a few, so I treated with gastro guard then put him on Succeed, which will come with him, he has to stay on the Succeed, if he doesn’t the ulcers will come back.  I tried cheaper medicines and they didn’t work as well, so I have just kept him on the Succeed without any issues.  He will crib when he eats in the stall and if he doesn’t have enough turnout, usually unless we have been iced in, he will go out no matter the weather.  He really enjoys being out with the herd of horses (we have a large number of horses here) and is the second alpha in my group of three.  He has very good ground manners and is very nice to lead though being a baby he still has a few baby moments, but always settles back down quickly.

He is a large horse that needs an advanced rider as he is strong and still a baby, he would prefer to go to an eventing or show jumping home as he doesn’t jump with nice enough form for a hunter and gets bored with the same jumps.  A tall strong advanced rider that will remind him to listen is what he needs and will do better than with me since I am only 5′4.

He will come with his halter and a stable blanket that came with him when I got him in 2010.

Nalees Crown is flashy, tall, well put together mare.  This mare has the most adorable face and a cute expression, especially when you have pepermints in your hands. Nalee is looking for a best friend, someone who will spend time spoiling and grooming her. She really wants to please and will make a cute show horse with the proper training. Nalee is more on the green side and needs a confident rider to show her the ropes and help her gain confidence, this is why her fee is lower. Thankfully she is completely sound and has clean legs. She should physically be able to handle any discipline but would make a fancy litte hunter with her looks and presence. Nalee is comfortable in all three gaits and will be awesome when she is completely trained.

Nalees Crown retired sound 09/10/11 with 39 lifetime starts. She has been turned out and is ready for her second career. Bobby is a true 17.1 hands and with his thick build, he looks more like a Warmblood. He is body clipped and looks like a fancy show horse.  Bobby is currently walking, trotting and cantering around the ring and has been ridden around the farm with no problems. He would be a nice low level show horse, fox hunter, 4-H project, trail horse, or a fun paper chase horse. With his body type he could carry a larger rider or be the perfect gentleman’s partner.

Bobby two Pieces retired 05/21/11 due to a leg injury. He has had 28 lifetime starts and won 68,000 dollars. He is a grandson to the great Storm Cat. 2008 Thoroughbred gelding “Foley’s Five” was adopted by Jodee Hunt and her family in June 2011.

Foley had only 2 starts but won his very first race, earned a total of $12,684, and last raced 2/11/11 at Aqueduct racetrack.

Foley has been enjoying his new life with his new family in Michigan. He has also taken great pleasure in sharing his daily pasture time with fellow New Vocations’ Graduates “Rustic Ridge” and “Fund the Minister”. All three horses are in dressage training at Windancer Farms.

Jodee reports that Foley has been doing very well in his training. “He is learning to bend, round over (occasionally with self-carriage, which is lovely), work off the track on the rail, do circles and serpentines, and yield to the leg.  His transitions (upward and downward) continue improving, as are his halt and remaining at a halt (not an easy thing for OTTBs to master).  He’s gradually transitioning from all those silly newby behaviors (raised head and inverted back; shoveling his nose; odd things with tongue and teeth) to keeping his mouth closed and calmly chewing the bit.”

Jodee also mentioned that she and Foley participated in a dressage clinic with Sue Thorne in January, 2012. “Foley was SO GOOD, and I learned a lot from Sue.  She complimented him at least four times during our lesson, and said we make a very nice pair (naturally, I agree completely!).  What a great feeling to cap off our first six months together with such a fantastic day!  We have another clinic with her scheduled March 4 and we’re working hard to keep up the progress we’ve made together so far.”

Moms Activelil Star is a 2008 bay filly with 2 hind socks. She currently stands 15.3 but is still growing. Star is a real sweetheart. She is very curious and will watch everything you do. Star is also very athletic and would do well in jumping or eventing. Her sire Activist is known for producing nice jumping horses with a willingness to please. Star is a floaty mover with nice comfortable gaits. She carries herself with a naturally low head and is fairly balanced for a young girl.

The belief that the Off the Track Thoroughbreds are well suited for a second career is a sentiment that is obviously shared by New Vocations as well, so we would like to say a sincere “Thank You” to The Jockey Club for working with us to promote that idea by sponsoring The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program classes at our horse show this year.

Single young mare, looking to join a family! She likes long walks with very patient people on a sunny afternoon. She is a tidy mare, well groomed, especially considering her neighbors are a bit on the furry side due to the weather. She has preferred to spend her chilly afternoons looking stylish in the paddocks with her season appropriate winter coat. And little miss social, she is! She loves being near other horses, especially the geldings, and dreads turnout by herself.

Under saddle, Sordid is learning quickly. She has a lot of room to grow which means she can be molded into what ever genre of riding her new family needs. A patient intermediate or experienced rider is a must at this point for her. She is a very receptive mare, which can make her a bit more sensitive at first but she is getting more relaxed with each ride. With a more experienced hand and better footing than we have been able to ride on, in no time she should be riding like a seasoned veteran! Between the mud and snowy conditions, we have been limited in how much riding we could do, which is reflected in the video clip. What she wants from her rider is a soft hand that keeps their cool when she gets nervous. Since she is so receptive, it takes minimal cueing for her to understand.

In hand, she is a quite a personable mare to be near. She stands very quietly in the crossties. She is a doll to groom and has a very full and flowing mane and tail. The more attention she can get, the happier she is and the same goes for having a consistent routine. She wants a job to do and a family to make very happy! Give this young mare a chance and she will love you for it!

This flashy gelding has that “Kiss Me I’m Irish” look all over him! “Patrick” is a nearly black gelding with 3 white socks, a star, and white over his lips which make them look puckered up all the time.  He is one of the friendliest horses in the barn and is loved by all with his looks, personality, and presence. Patrick is a very talented boy and is eager to learn. In just his first ride he was going over ground poles and cross rails. He picks up his canter from a walk and is naturally balanced and comfortable in all three gaits. Patrick will be a joy to work with and will excel in any discipline you desire. He gets along with everyone and loves to play with his buddies in the pasture. He is easy to handle and has no vices. He loves to be loved on and enjoys his ears rubbed as well as grooming time.

Patrick’s last raced 8/23/11 with only 9 lifetime starts. He retired because he never broke his maiden. He only made $675 in his career. He has very clean legs and has barely any wear and tear on them. He would do great as an eventer, hunter/jumper, or any other discipline. Don’t miss out on this gorgeous boy. Don’t let her shaggy winter coat dissuade you!!

Raven is the type of mare that isn’t phased by much. She will be able to do anything that her riders ask of her and happy to oblige.

Her first ride, which can be witnessed in the video, was a breeze for her. She didn’t bat an eyelash during the grooming or mounting portion and stands like a gem in the crossties.
Under saddle, she rides like an old pro. She is cool and collected throughout the ride, even with new things being thrown at her. Going over the logs, which throws most of them off, just seemed like a normal addition to the ride to her. She never got upset, was very manageable on the slick snowy footing, and took everything right in stride. She is happy to ride with a bit of slack in her rein or with a bit of contact. She has very comfortable gaits to ride, very smooth. Having the stirrups flopping on her sides or legs making contact doesn’t seem to bother her. She is happy to stand, back up, trot off, walk…basically do anything for her rider. Once she is on good footing, we believe that she should easily rack but since it was so slippery we didn’t ask for anything but a little bit of trot on the long sides and gently through a turn or two.

This wonderful mare would make a great addition to anyone’s home. She would excel in any genre of riding that she was introduced to. She is big enough to take up a taller riders leg but not so big that she would be intimidating, making her a good fit for a variety of riders. She’s still a diamond in the rough but in no time you could have her polished right up!

2005 Thoroughbred gelding “Magical Minister” was adopted by John Brown in January, 2011.

Magic raced 21 times, earned $23,633, and last raced at Ellis Park track on 8/6/10.

John reports: ” Magical Minister is the horse I needed. Magic has a lot of confidence and no spook. I live on a remote farm in the Arkansas Ozarks. On our rides we have jumped deer, elk and a bobcat. Magic is cool. He just keeps on walking. All except once when I found out he can really move fast. We were in a pasture with cows and passed a big pile of logs. A little calf was in a nook up in the logs scratching himself. We just happened to walk past his only escape route. The calf bolted and the only direction he could go was directly towards us. Magic moved out of the way, quickly. By the time I hit the ground, Magic and the calf were out of the way. Magic waited and did not run off. He is a good horse.

Magic has adapted to life on the farm. He runs in the pasture with two geldings. At first he was timid in the group but has grown comfortable with the “herd” and is now much more assertive.

Magic and I are interested in Dressage. We have a lot to learn. We get to ride about every other day in good weather. We work on exercises in the arena and trail ride on the farm. He did show improved attitude and energy after we went on our first trail ride on the Buffalo National River with lots of other horses. We get to do that about once or twice a month. We went to a “team cattle sorting” practice at the local roundup club. Magic did good and showed interest in the sport. And nobody made fun of my helmet and English saddle! Like father, like daughter… this mare is the spitting image of her sire D’wildcat. The rest of her lineage isn’t too shabby either. Granddaughter of Kingmambo, one of the worlds leading international sires whose offspring have earned almost $95 million and Forest Wildcat, 4 time stakes winner himself.

There is nothing petite about this mare! Fortune has a solid build and more muscle than most of the geldings in the barn, but her pretty head and expressive face reminds you that she is a mare. She has more of a forward thinking personality whether being handled or ridden and she seems to have interest in what’s ahead for her. Fortune has no spook, a good natural balance and will maintain an even rhythm if the rider asks her to. She prefers a rider that is quiet and steady because she will conform to the rider’s way of going and is getting more confident with each ride.

Fortune is currently going to turn out with 2 other mares and is in the middle of the pecking order. Daily turn out time with her friends is a requirement as far as she is concerned!

Fortune had 22 starts, winning 6 races, had one second, and five third place finishes, earning $33,142. Her last race was on 11-8-11 and was retired due to lack of competitiveness. She has no vices and will be suitable for any discipline.

Such Fortune is by D’wildcat out of Such Flair by Kingmambo.

Shira is a dream to ride from her attentive walk, to her floaty canter. She is great getting her leads, lead changes, and is graceful over lower level fences. I have taken her out on trail rides several times, but she is nervous in surroundings she is unfamiliar with. She will need someone that is very patient, and loving as she has anxiety, and is a weaver. In a laid back, calm environment, with minimal horses, she will thrive!

She had a good career on the track, having 24 starts, of which she won 6!  She deserves to live a life of leisure. She will be best suited as a pleasure horse.

Shira has clean legs and is suitable for any discipline.

His name suits him well as he is truly a love to be around. Forest is quite the gentleman with his polite and patient personality and having a beautiful face and nice body doesn’t hurt either!

Here is a horse whose breeding shines through in his build and sound mind. As you work with him in his stall, he stands stock still watching everything you do because getting in trouble is not on his agenda. That thought carries over into his under saddle work ethic. He just goes to work without question due to his great training at the track as well. Forest is always a pleasure to watch as he is working in the ring; he’s cute and such a good boy! Nice gaits, good balance and a good sense of rhythm round out his attributes. He will make a nice project for an intermediate or novice rider with an instructor. Forest currently goes to turn out with 2 other geldings and is the bottom of the pecking order.

Forest had 16 starts, earned $51,119 and last raced 11/22/11. Forest has no vices and would be suitable for flat work and lower level jumping.

Mi Forest Amor is by Forestry out of Frolic Away by Pentelicus.

Morey has a beautiful head and a very kind expression to her face. She is a sweet mare and loves attention. She currently working well at the walk, trots, and canter. She naturally yields to leg pressure. She has lovely, comfortable gaits, and goes quietly under saddle.  Morey is currently jumping cross rails and really enjoys herself. With her gorgeous looks she would make the ideal hunter or field hunter. She would also be suited for lower level jumping, and with a little training she would also make an awesome all around horse or 4-H project. She would be a fun horse to take on paper chases or trail riding.

Less or More last raced 11/25/11 with 15 lifetime starts. Her sire is Valid Wager and her bloodlines go back to Halo and In reality. Every time anyone walks by her stall they all say what a cute little girl she is! Think has a small dished face with the biggest eyes and a petite, well proportioned frame. But don’t let her size fool you because she looks much bigger under saddle and enough barrel to take up the rider’s leg.

Think is a more forward moving horse with an easy canter and a light rhythm due to her athleticism and fine boned frame. She is a quick thinker and likes a rider that has a clear and easy going way of riding and explaining what is expected of the horse because at this time she can get a little tense under saddle. After all, her last race was just on 12-20-11 and so she just needs time to adjust to her new life. Handling her on the ground has been a breeze because she is very respectful. Think currently goes to turn out with 2 other mares and get along well with them.

She had 25 starts, earned $19,604 and last raced on 12-20-11. She was retired due to lack of competitiveness, has no apparent injuries and has no vices and will be suitable for any discipline.

One Would Think is by Macho Uno (Holy Bull) out of The Real Jewel by El Prado (IRE).

One thing is for sure – ZifZaf cannot be confused with rif raf – this is one eye-catching, stunning looking gelding. Make no mistake, ZifZaf oozes class and is definitely a head turner. Just 6 years old, he raced only 13 times winning $150,000 and last breezed a month ago. Fresh out of training, he has adapted to his new life quickly and within 3 days of his arrival was already on turnout in a pasture with an older gelding.

By War Chant, he displays his characteristic good nature and he inherited his good looks from his grand sire Diesis. ZifZaf is good to handle in all respects from shoeing to clipping, has no vices and has never worn a chain when led. Kind in his stall even when eating, he has a wonderful temperament. Zif Zaf has never put a foot wrong and has been ridden both in the arena and around the farm. He is extremely mellow and loves to pack around. Out on trails from day one he has been totally rock solid and has encountered all types of vehicles, farm machinery and a herd of galloping horses chasing down the fence line all to no avail. He has never spooked out on his adventures and is content to do as asked. ZifZaf has been evaluated by our vet and would be more than suitable for trail riding, flat work and dressage. He’s a great horse that you just have fun with and he’s also great company out of the saddle too.

ZifZaf is not suitable for turnout with mares and would not be suitable for a home where he is the only horse. He does extremely well with just one other gelding and is content to stay out all day. He could be then gradually adjusted to turn out in larger numbers. However he is fully body clipped and so will need to be blanketed and stalled at night.

ZifZaf has all the qualities of a top notch horse and the looks to match. This is an exceptional example of a Thoroughbred and he has all the qualities that dispels all the myths about ex-racehorses.

This is a very handsome, big, strong 12 yr old that racks smoothly under saddle and trots in harness.  Sebastian raced 62 times over four years.  Sebastian has an interesting past that includes a couple of years pulling an Amish buggy, so his driving manners are amazing.  He is a loving, affectionate horse, gentle with people, cats, and dogs.  He spent three yrs in an adoptive home where he was ridden in a ring and on trails connecting to the property.  He has experienced deer, turkey, and dogs running around.  Tractors, mowers, and weedeaters are no problem. He stands for just about anything including to be vacuumed!  Haylie evaluated him and shares, “Sebastian is an extremly level headed gelding with alot to offer. He rides just as nice as he drives. He has GREAT ground manners also. This guy has a smooth rack and can really hit a lick out in the open. He is easy to get along with and real neat in the  stall.  Sebastian is easy to ride, but there are still times he needs someone with confidence to tell him its ‘okay’ through their body langauge. Just like his name, Tucker has some motor under his hood and is just as flashy! Having retired from racing in 2004, Tucker has been in the same home for approx 5 years and has done a multitude of different activities from Pony Club to eventing. Sadly his young owner has gone on to university which nesscitated his return to the program.

Tucker is 16 hh and just turned 12 year old. Flashy with chrome, he is a solid horse that has gone barefoot for over 2 years without problem. He is good to shoe, clip, bathe, catch etc and has been hauled frequently. He was used to babysit other horses in his former home and since being at the Lexington facility, he has been on daily turnout with 5 other geldings and gets along exceedingly well with all of them.

He has no vices and is a forward horse that requires a rider with light sensitive hands. He would not be suitable for a novice rider or for a rider whose first instinct is to pull on the reins or hold a constant contact. With leg and light contact, he goes nicely in a frame and is exceptionally well schooled on the flat and over fences going nicely in a french link although he has also been ridden in a hackamore. He has competed in 3 day events at the Kentucky Horse Park as well as some other events. He has shown up to Level 3 (3′3″) jumpers and has also participated in clinics and 2 parades. Other activites have included a poker run, a hunter pace, a fox hunt and countless other trail rides. He has been infrequently ridden over the past 2 years and will need legging back up. He has been started back and ridden at the facility and has done very well and will continue to progress and settle further with a consistent routine and training program.

Tucker does have a parrot mouth which may be the reason for his increased mouth sensitivity. It has no impact on his general health or eating, riding ability as evidenced by his photos and he is an easy keeper, carrying good weight. It is recommended by the vet that he have his teeth floated every 6 months so any potential adopter should be aware of that.

Tucker has also been evaluated by a vet for soundness, has been x rayed and flexed and he is sound and suitable for all pursuits including jumping. This is a rare opportunity to adopt a horse that has a proven show record, tremendous form over fences and a documented prior history.

This guy is genuinely sweet and kind. All There is very easy to work with, seeks out attention and likes being groomed. He is so quiet in his stall that you don’t even know he’s in the barn. He is always a gentleman to handle even when he has to pass by other horses running in the pasture behind him; he just holds his breath and keeps it all together until he is turned loose.

His kind nature continues under saddle as well. As evident in his video, All There is quiet enough to work on a loose rein in the outdoor arena and the video was just his second ride. His first ride was in the indoor arena, also on a loose rein and was just as quiet. In watching him work, he gives you the impression that not much bothers him. Because he is quiet and self assured, he could be suitable for a novice rider, but as we advise with all of our horses coming off the track, a novice rider should always work with a trainer for help in retraining the horse. He will be suitable for any discipline.

All There currently goes to turn out with 2 other geldings who are playful in the pasture and he is at the bottom of the pecking order. He will play some, but will not initiate it.

All There had 41 starts, earned $38,061 and last raced 10-19-11. He had a month off before coming into the program. He was retired due to lack of competitiveness: his race record shows more 2nds and 3rds than 1sts!

2006 Thoroughbred gelding “Sporting Boy” was adopted by Lynn & Mackenzie Harper in October, 2011.

Sporting Boy had a total of 17 starts, earned $15,155, and last raced on 8/16/11 at Penn National track.

Lynn had this to say about their adoption experience and Sport’s progress: ” We adopted Sporting Boy in October, 2011 from New Vocations. The PA rep, Sherry, was so very helpful and patient with finding a horse that would fit our potential riding needs. In the end, she called us about a horse named Sporting Boy. We came to visit him and he seemed to “choose” my daughter, Mackenzie from the moment they met.

We took him home the next weekend and started working with him. Mackenzie wanted a horse to (eventually) do eventing with. Our trainer was immediately smitten with Sport and to this date is still amazed at his personality and their progress. He actively seeks out Mackenzie when we arrive at the barn. As one of our friends put it – they are like a Disney story! The mutual respect they have for each other is really remarkable. When she is trying to teach him a new thing he tries until he gets it. She’s started him over ground poles and small jumps already. He’s a great find with a great sparkle to his eye. I think we should be ready to do some schooling shows by the Spring season and hope they do nicely together.

I just wanted to thank you and your organization for insuring that these fabulous horses get the chance for a new life after racing. Congratulations to Sporting Boy and Mackenzie!

Gold has a sweet curiosity of the people around him. He watches everyone from his stall with a bright expression, just hoping that someone will stop and pay some attention to him. He is still a bit timid when you go into his stall, but that will change once he has the security of a person to call his own. Under saddle he can be a bit timid but workmanlike, because if you tell him it’s okay, then he believes it’s okay.

Whether being handled or ridden, Gold is always very polite and it seems extremely important to him to please his handler or rider. Scolding him for anything would worry him. Gold is quiet enough for a novice rider, but the rider needs to be working with a trainer since he has only been off the track since 12/2/11 and is just starting his re-training. Being quiet and generous with positive reinforcement will be the best method for keeping him happy and willing to please which is easy to do since he is so sweet and kind and deserving of it. Gold is light in the bridle and has good balance with a more forward, ground covering movement. He will be suitable for any flat work and jumping.

He is currently going to turn out with 2 other geldings. He seeks the comfort of the herd, but does not participate in the game playing which would make him a nice companion horse. Gold had 18 starts, earned $10,349 and last raced on 12/2/11.  He has no vices.

Ziada’s Gold is by Cape Town (Seeking The Gold) out of Ziada by Sir Cat.

2005 Thoroughbred “Tonsina” was adopted by April Anthony in August, 2011.

Tonsina had a total of 16 lifetime starts, earned $55,893 and last raced on 11/9/09 at Philadelphia Park track.

April reports: ” Tonsina (now called “Finnigan”) has settled in really well in his new home. He is now being trained for a career in the hunter ring, and we think he is going to do really well. He attended his first horse show placing 2nd and 3rd over fences his first time ever seeing show jumps and flower boxes! He is very smart, and easy going. He gets along great with our other horses, and has put on a lot of weight. He still needs some more muscling, but is really starting to look great. Thanks for the opportunity to own such a nice horse. I couldn’t ask for anything more from him! We are so very pleased.”

Not only does his color get your attention, but then his sweet personality completely wins you over. Hoss Absolutely loves attention and his adorable face draws people right to him which makes him very happy! Hoss was just gelded on 12/12/11 but you would never know that he was a stallion when he came to us. He has been a perfect gentleman to handle and gets along great with his turn out buddy too. He can not go out with mares even though he has shown no real interest in them, but we have not put him out in the pasture next to them either.

Hoss is still young, and even though he has been quiet and respectful under saddle, he will need a rider that can bring him along in a quiet, confident manner because he really looks to his rider for guidance.  Hoss has a good understanding of the basics and already is beginning to yield to lateral pressure and contact. He likes clear instruction and then he will try hard to please the rider, which in turn allows him to learn new things quickly. Hoss has a nice rhythm and with his movement and build, he may be better suited for dressage or flat work, and jumping. Trail riding may interest him as well because he has been both hand walked and ridden down the road several times, never spooked at anything and actually was very curious about where he was going.

Hoss had 14 starts, earned $11,591, and last raced on 12/5/11. He was retired because he was not competitive. He has no vice.

Frisco Lass is a sweet, kind mare that presents endless possibilities from trail riding to broodmare prospect to low level jumpers. She has been ridden daily both in the arena and on trails around the farm and has never put a foot wrong. She learns quickly what is expected of her and is a willing mount that has never shown any bad behavior. With no vices, she is good to handle and has been turned out all night with a band of other mares as well as being the sole companion for one elderly mare. She will stand untied in the aisle for grooming, saddling and has no problem standing loose in the washrack for bathing.

Under saddle, she is very easy with a good mouth and is willing and happy to pack around even in high winds! With no spook, she learns and adapts very quickly and took to jumping small cross rails immediately. By the second day, she was able to jump a line without a thought with reins as long as washing lines and she really seems to enjoy having a job and demonstrates a great work ethic which should be capitalized on.

Having raced 10 times, Frisco’s last race was 1/9/11 and she was retired as non- competitive. When she first retired, Frisco was turned out 24/7 although at our facility she is in 12 hrs and out 12 hrs. She would do best in a training/boarding facility atmosphere where she is in a regular program where the training is consistent and she has turnout buddies. Frisco is not suitable for living out alone and does better when she has the companionship of other horses. She is by Scrimshaw who came 3rd in the Breeders Cup and is a Great Granddaughter of Mr. Prospector who’s attributes and traits are highly prized in broodmares.

Frisco is a decent size, solid with correct confirmation and good feet. She has tremendous potential in the right home and although may be regarded as a little plain, her heart and personality more than make up for it. This mare should not be underestimated or overlooked – her attitude and the way she took to popping over cross rails speaks volumes about what she is capable of and her ability to maintain her calmness and not become fizzy is a definite asset in her trainability.

Nobody will be saying “whatucallit” when Thingamabob is around because he is unforgetable in all the right ways. Standing 16.1hh, he is well built with good bone and a wonderful laid back disposition. He has no vices and is good to clip, catch, bathe etc and even out on a big pasture with 5 other geldings, he comes immediately to the gate when called. Thingy is a quiet horse that has a kind willing manner both on the ground and under saddle and has great potential as an all around horse. He is responsive and goes nicely in the arena and is rock solid out on trails. He has also been lightly started over fences and is brave and willing, never showing any hesitation.

Thingy enjoys people and company and will stand untied for grooming and saddling. He learns quickly and has a heart of gold. He would be ideally suited for field hunting, low level hunters and a bit of everything in between. He is used to children and dogs and has been exposed to farm machinery and vehicles. Thingy would be suitable for an intermediate rider upwards and is a fun sensible horse to ride.

Oscar is a very good looking, fun kind of guy. He is an “in your pocket, what have you got, what are you doing”, people loving horse that is great fun to have around. People are drawn to him and his wonderful personality. He is truly a gentle giant.

Oscar is naturally free through the shoulder and has 3 good gaits. He is super comfortable to ride. He will also shorten and do a collected trot and rocking-horse canter. A full cheek snaffle shows of his beautiful head. He will require at least an intermediate level rider.

Oscar currently has shoes on in front but he can go barefoot without a problem. He clips, bathes, and lunges. Oscar has osselets on both of his front fetlocks that are completely set and he is limited to flat work only. He would make an excellent equitation horse.  Oscars favorite treats are mints and fruit loops. He has his own pasture but has daily turnout with his 2 pasture buddies as well.

Snuff is a gelding with many facets to his personality. There are times when he loves to work and other times when he would rather not be bothered. A work session goes best if he is lunged first. The longer he works the better he gets. He requires at least an intermediate rider to keep him on track. He tends to pitty-pat but will lengthen if ridden with a strong seat.

Snuff loves a bath and will stand to be sprayed as long as you have the hose out. His favorite treats are starlite mints and carrots. He does best if kept shod in front. He loads, clips, lunges and stands quietly for the farrier. His only vice is that he cribs and wears a collar when in his stall. He has his own pasture but gets turned out with 2 other geldings in the big pasture. He loves running and playing with his buddies.

Snuff deserves the opportunity to reach his full potential. He has been started over cavaletti and cross rails. His legs are clean and he is ready to go to the next level, whether it be low-level hunter, dressage, or trails. If given the opportunity, he will do very well in the show ring or enjoy riding him on the farm.

LAURA, Ohio, Jan. 6, 2012 – Dr. Kendall Hansen will present a check for $12,000 to New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program on Saturday at Turfway Park.  The donation honors the Northern Kentucky physician’s win in the $2 million Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Stakes with the silvery-gray colt he named for himself, Hansen.  The presentation will be made before Turfway’s ninth race.

The check comes as a part of the annual New Vocations Breeders’ Cup pledge.  Owners and trainers with entries in the $25.5 million Breeders’ Cup World Championships are asked to pledge a percentage of their Breeders’ Cup earnings to support the program’s efforts. Over the past three years the pledge has raised $150,000 to support New Vocations’ mission to rehab, retrain and rehome retired racehorses.  In addition to Hansen, this year’s participants included owners John Fort, Mike Repole, and Rick Shanley and trainers Kiaran McLaughlin, Eddie Plesa, Todd Pletcher, Justin Sallusto, and Nick Zito.

Because his colt won his first two starts at Turfway Park before winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Stakes, Hansen thought it appropriate to return to Turfway to present his pledge and promote Thoroughbred retirement and adoption efforts.

“I’ve owned horses for about 30 years and know that having a horse like Hansen is a once in a lifetime experience,” said Hansen, a pain management specialist.  “The New Vocations Breeders’ Cup pledge offered me the opportunity to give back to the industry based off of Hansen’s success.  It has been a win-win situation for everyone.  I’m happy to be able to support such a worthy cause that helps find homes for retired racehorses.”

“We are extremely grateful to Dr. Hansen for his generous contribution and to the many other owners and trainers who participated in this year’s pledge,” said New Vocations Program Director Anna Ford. “There are so many horses retiring from the track that need to be transitioned to new careers.  The state of the economy has made it difficult to keep up with the number of horses needing our services.  Every dollar raised helps New Vocations put horses into homes, which in turn leaves the door open to help more horses.”

Founded in 1992, New Vocations has become the largest racehorse adoption program in the country and has facilities in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Tennessee. In 2011 the program rehomed more than 400 retired racehorses. Working directly with owners and trainers who need aftercare for horses leaving the track, the program currently receives horses from more than 30 racetracks, including Turfway Park. New Vocations has a sound adoption system that is proven to move a large number of horses in a relatively short period of time. The program focuses on adoption rather than retirement, believing that each horse deserves to have an individual home and purpose.

New Vocations is one of the agencies supported by Turfway Park’s Turfway Aftercare Program fund.  Owners pay one dollar each time one of their horses starts at Turfway, and Turfway matches the donation.  The program, which began full operation in September 2011, is expected to generate about $14,000 per year.  Funds are divided among agencies that take and transition horses that are stabled at Turfway or last raced at the track.

Birdie is a cute laid back boy with a sweet personality.  His name says it all. Birdie is well bred. His grandsire Grindstone as well as his great grandsire Unbridled both Kentucky Derby winners. Birdie would rather show his winnings in the show ring. Birdie currently walk, trots, and canters and shows promise in the hunter ring. He has three comfortable gaits and with a little more training he will be the perfect all around horse. He could also do low level jumping, foxhunting, hunter paces, or any fun event like that. Birdie would also make a nice trail horse. He has a good brain, with no spoke. He is very easygoing and has no vices. He retired 12/1/11 with only 13 lifetime starts. He has an old knee injury, but it is not giving him any trouble so he should be good for lower level riding. If you are looking for an easy going partner, look no further than Rockabye Birdie.

Big, flashy and eye catching is what describes this successful racehorse. Pirate was as classy as they come in his racing career with 48 starts in earnings of $440,000. He was even a Grade 3 stakes winner! This handsome man has good ground manners, loves to be brushed and is quiet to ride with his smooth gaits and soft mouth. Pirate is ready for his next career while he is already trotting over crossrails, excelling and responding to leg pressure, and showing potential for an event or show prospect. He loves to be turned out and even plays well with his pasture buddies.This horse is unique with not only his personality, but also he has a tiny growth below his right ear. Tecumsa is a very sweet and sensitive gelding who would be a pleasure to have in any barn. Even though he can be a bit shy in his stall, he will stand quietly to be groomed or just loved on once he knows what your intention is. He just needs time to trust someone, but is truly a gentleman to handle and to ride. Under saddle, he looks to the rider for confidence and approval, and even though he was a bit nervous in this, his first ride, he was very well behaved and kept a positive attitude, showing a good work ethic. He has also shown he already has the basic understanding of contact and moving off leg pressure and he is naturally rhythmic, uphill and balanced. Tecumsa really seemed to enjoy his leisurely ride down the driveway despite the frigid temperature outside! He is currently going to turn out with one other gelding and he is a good pasture buddy.  Tecumsa should be suitable for most disciplines including jumping.

He had 37 starts, earned $21,780 and last raced on 12/12/11. He was retired due to lack of competitiveness and has no vices.

Quarry is a unique chestnut with white hairs through out his body.He is a super cute and handsome with a big personality. He has been of the track for 2 years and has already had a little training under him. He moves off leg pressure and carries his head in a nice dressage frame. Quarry has a nice ground covering trot and a floaty canter. This flashy boy will shine in the dressage ring, but he is sound for any discipline. He retired from racing on 10/01/09 with 27 starts. He retired sound and no longer competitive as a race horse. He has had a lot of time off as well as tons of turnout. He is a super sweet guy that enjoys work in the arena as well as trail riding. He will go out alone with no problem. Quarry would be great for an intermediate rider and could even carry a larger rider with his big built. Don’t let this awesome gelding go. He would make a great best friend and partner for almost anyone.

Aramus is an absolutely adorable gelding that will melt your heart. He is very inquisitive and has to know about everything that goes on around him. Once you walk into his stall, he does everything possible to keep you there to rub his face. Besides having a great personality, he is stunning to look at. This well proportioned gelding is extremely athletic and talented, and seems to have aptitude for any discipline.

Aramus was in race training, but never raced because he showed no desire to run. He has clean legs and could go on to any discipline, but would really shine in hunters or dressage with his beautiful gaits. Regardless of the discipline, Aramus will be for an experienced rider only. With his young age, he seems to have less worldly experience than our other horses. He learns quickly with a skilled, confident, and patient rider. Once he instills his trust in you, he will make a terrific partner.

Aramus is currently going out with one other gelding, and is extremely playful with his friend. Aramus is good for the farrier, and easy to handle on the ground.

Aramus Colony is by Aramus (Storm Bird) out of Colony Star by Pleasant Colony. Aramus has no vices.

Repent is an adorable gelding with a heart of gold. This athletic youngster is an attractive mover, with a terrific natural rhythm. Repent is well made, with a nice topline and good proportions. He has a cute face, with a long forelock, a star, a very kissable snip, and a milk mustache. This guy is going to be a head turner!

Repent is all business under saddle and went right to work like an old pro for his first ride at our facility, never batting an eye at anything around him. In his stall, he can be a bit wary, but has never acted out in any way. He will do best in a home where he is handled by patient and gentle people, who can help teach him to trust. With good handling, he should develop into a total gentleman. He enjoys being groomed, and once he warms up to you (carrots help!) he is a sweetheart. Repent will be suitable for any kind of flatwork, and recreational jumping.

Repent currently goes to turnout with one other gelding. He usually starts off a bit spunky but quickly settles in and behaves at a maturity level on par with the older gelding that he goes out with. He is kind to his buddy, but will keep him in check when appropriate.

Repent had 14 starts, earned $17,155 and last raced on 8-4-11. Repent and Rejoice is by Repent out of Rush St Type by Phone Trick.

Sir Swervalot last raced 12/1/11 with 57 lifetime starts, making almost $200,000. He was retired due to no longer being competitive. Swervy was owned by a vet who made sure he was not raced hard throughout the years. King is like a big teddy bear you could hug all day with the kindest puppy dog eyes ever.  This easy going guy has been turned out for 2 months prior to coming to the program.  He is completely adjusted to turnout and has a very thick winter coat making him look like a woolly teddy bear. When he sheds out this spring, he will be absolutely gorgeous. He is a bit on the thin side but with some TLC should quickly fill out.

King was a superstar his first time back under saddle.  You would never guess he had missed a day of work. He was extremely quiet and needed no lounging before riding. King is a slow moving guy, and carries his head naturally low. He would be suitable for the less experienced rider with his kind, easy way of going. He has very nice gaits and is naturally balanced. He is also quiet in the bridle and doesn’t pull. King would make a great hunter prospect with his movement and quiet disposition.

Teenage King last raced 07/02/11 with 14 lifetime starts. He retired due to no longer being competitive. He has nice clean legs and good feet. Do not let this boy pass you by. He might be a bit rough around the edges right now but will surely come to shine in his next career.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all – Fairmont that’s who!! Fairmont turns heads wherever he may be and with his striking markings, totally calm disposition and easy way of taking everything in his stride, he quickly becomes a firm favorite with everyone he meets.

Fairmont is 8 yrs old and stands 17hh tall and is a large framed horse but underneath it all, he is a gentle giant. He raced 56 times winning over $150,000 with his last race being only 6 weeks ago on 11/12/11. He adapted to his new retirement very quickly and is already on turnout in a large field with one younger gelding. He is good to clip, shoe, bathe, catch etc, has never required a chain to be lead and has no vices.

After several weeks of downtime, he has been started back under saddle and on his very first ride, went on the trails around the farm and he was fantastic. He was unphased by dogs, trucks, farm machinery and other horses out in pastures and throughly enjoyed a more sedate way of life.

Due to the extent of his racing career, he does have large front ankles and although he has no known soundness issues, jumping will not be part of his future and Fairmont is available as a pleasure/trail horse with perhaps some lower level dressage only.

Fairmont would be best suited in a home where he can have regular daily turnout with at least one other gelding and as he is not yet accustomed to 24 hour turnout, he will require being stalled at night and is currently blanketed although he is already very fluffy especially around his ears! He is an absolute delight and was highly regarded by his trainer. He would be a welcome if somewhat large present to have under your tree this holiday season.

This sweet girl is looking for someone to call her own to help her transition into her new life. Different has blossomed since coming into the program in November. She has become much more social and is now asking for attention from people.  She enjoys standing quietly in her stall and watching everything going on in the barn.  She really likes attention and face rubs from people who are calm and speak softly to her. Once she has her person to trust, she will be a very loyal friend and riding partner.

In turn out, Different plays with her pasture buddies and is definitely the leader of the group. Under saddle, she is a forward moving and forward thinking mare who likes the rider to be quiet and confident and not to ask too many things of her at one time. She has become steady at the walk and trot, but still needs work at the canter and on balance in the smaller arena. Outside of the arena though, she will walk quietly down the drive way on a loose rein and seems to really enjoy herself. At this point in her life, Different will need a more experienced rider who is quiet and reassuring as this method has proven to be the way she prefers to be ridden and handled (as any mare does). She will be suitable as a dressage, pleasure or trail horse and low-level jumping.

Different had 38 starts, placing in 21 of her races, earned $68,737 and last raced on 8-5-11. She was retired because she earned it. She is easy to handle, likes to be groomed and is currently going to turnout with 2 other mares. Different has no vices.

Redjet is a lovely gelding who truly is wise beyond his years. This gentle giant is a pleasure to work with both on the ground and under saddle. As a big youngster, he is still learning how to get himself organized under saddle, but once he figures it out, he will be quite the head turner. Though he is green and inexperienced, he is pretty straightforward to ride with a soft mouth and an obedient nature. He has big loose gaits that would be suitable for either Hunters or Dressage. In addition to ring work, Redjet seems to really enjoy riding around the farm and is quiet and confident enough to do so on a loose rein.

Redjet is currently being turned out with one other gelding and is kind but playful with him. In a larger herd, he would most likely be on the lower end of the pecking order. He has no vices, but he can be a bit protective of his stall, especially around feeding time. Once her learns to trust people and adapts to life off the track a bit more, that should diminish. Other than that, he is always polite and respectful of his handler, and has not given us any issues. Redjet will need more conditioning in order to build up muscle on his hind end. Once he has, he should be suitable for any mid-level pursuits, including jumping.

Redjet had 6 starts, earned $10,813 and last raced on 11-21-11. With only one win to his record, he was retired due to lack of competitiveness. Redjet’s Promise is by Johar out of Flying Redjet by Halo.

Here’s your chance to Kiss Santa all year round and she’s definately on the nice list! On the petite side, she is all heart and with a wonderful calm disposition that belies her young age. she has potential in all fields. She has good straight legs  and was not competitive on the track having only 2 starts winnning just over a thousand dollars. She last raced in May and has had the rest of the year off only recently entering the New Vocations program.

Santa settled in immediately and is turned out daily with one older mare. She has been lightly started back under saddle and will be trail ridden over the next week or so. She is good to handle in all respects and quiet is an understatement – she is very respectful, well mannered and easy to deal with and good to clip, shoe, catch etc. She has nice balanced paces on the lunge line displaying cadence and with continued work and building up her fitness level, her athetic ability will improve. Santa is sound for jumping along with any other pursuits and would make an ideal prospect for the rider looking to do a bit of everything in the future.

I’ve had Linn Side Louie nearly three years.  He has never been an easy horse.  He always seemed angry, frustrated, or upset.  He threw fits and kicked the stall walls with a vengeance.  He started at the bottom of the herd and slowly fought his way to the top.  He would kick at my husband’s horse whenever we tried to ride side by side.  He viciously attacked an older gelding and finally had to be separated all together.  If I didn’t keep him who would take him?  I enjoyed riding him, and we’d been successful in the few competitive rides we’d entered.  But he is big and spirited and will spook right out of the blue.

Maybe, Louie had come to me for a reason.  I vowed to make it work.  The stable owner built a small pasture just for Louie.  His attitude gradually improved, as did his appetite.  He still kicked the stall and the trailer, but quit kicking at me.  However, he became very nervous and spooky.  The former ATV would now tremble in fright out on the trails. I had worked so hard to get him over other issues, and now he was virtually unrideable.  I was at my lowest point.

My husband Thomas helped me move forward.  He had always loved Louie, though the horse was far too spirited for him to ride.  Thomas’ horse wasn’t up to the 25 miles where Louie and I compete.  And Louie wasn’t used to trail riding alone.  He really depended on the other horses for his confidence.  Thomas started walking beside us on short rides to help Louie adapt to being ridden alone.  It took time, but eventually Louie would trot off alone.

Louie was quite nervous on our first competitive ride alone. I decided it would be easier to just let him go faster than I planned rather than fighting to hold him back. He ended up doing really well.  He didn’t spook at anything for the entire 15 mile loop.  Louie did well at the vet check, and Thomas was there to greet us.  The last ten miles were more hilly and difficult than the first 15.  The hills kept coming.  Louie actually walked some.  We enjoyed the scenery.  We enjoyed each other.  As we approached base camp we picked up the pace and came down the hill to see Thomas cheering us on.  We had done it! I was in tears.  I was so grateful to my horse who put in such an effort for me. I was so grateful to my husband for having faith in me and in Louie.   Louie pulsed down well and ate and drank.  He trotted out great and looked ready to do another loop!  We finished 10^th in his first 25 mile ride!  There is no prize money, no big awards, no fame.  It takes place in the middle of nowhere with no crowds and no cheering.  But it was such an achievement for us both.  I put aside all of my anger and disappointment and gave Louie a chance.  Louie put aside all of his uirks and issues to do what I asked, and do it so well and so willingly.  Yes, Louie is difficult, but he has heart.  That day, I think he finally gave that heart to me.

Louie is still doing well.  We continue to forgive each other our mistakes and enjoy our time together. We did very well in another 15 mile ride a few weeks later.  Louie was a well behaved trail eating machine. I can’t wait to start the season again next year.

Jules is a mature mare who seems to be very comfortable in her own skin. She is a pleasure to handle on the ground and really enjoys being groomed. She is still adjusting to her new job under saddle though, so she does better with praise and encouragement during the ride. The quieter and softer the rider is, the quicker she learns and responds to the training. She has natural balance, smooth gaits and is an easy mare to handle and a joy to be around. Riding down the driveway and around the farm seems to be something she enjoys to do and Jules will make a nice dressage or pleasure/ trail horse, and low level jumping.

Jules goes to turn out with 2 other mares and is in the middle of the herd.  She enjoys being the babysitter rather than the leader.

Jules had 23 starts, all at one track, but is adjusting well to her new life and has been enjoying all the attention she has been getting. She earned $24,156, last raced on 9-8-11 and was retired due to lack of competitiveness. She placed in 11 races, but only won one race.

Miss Jules is by Slide to the Left (Strike the Gold) out of Julie’s Legacy by Gold Stage. She has no vices.
