Adoption Process

#1 Fill out an adoption application: Anyone interested in adopting from New Vocations is required to first fill out the adoption application, which can be found on our website. It should only take you 10-15 minutes to fill out online. There is also a printable version that can be faxed or mailed to New Vocation's Hilliard facility. Applications submitted online or faxed will take 1 to 2 weeks to be processed. There is a $10 processing fee which can be paid online by credit or debit card or mailed in by check. If you are serious about adopting a retired racehorse, please fill out an application even if you don't, yet, see the horse you want. We do not hold horses while applications are being approved. The horse you want may be adopted by someone who is already approved while you are waiting for your application to be processed

#2 Approval: Once your application has been processed you will be notified via e-mail stating that you are either approved or not approved. Once you see a horse that you like you will need to contact the facility in which the horses is stabled. Please note that we have two facilities. If you need more information on a horse at the Laura facility you should contact Dot Morgan at dot@horseadoption.com and for horses at the Hilliard facility you should contact Anna Ford at anna@horseadoption.com .

#3 Adoption fees: The horse's adoption fee must be paid before the horse will be held. Fees may be placed on a debit card, MasterCard, Visa, Am Exp but a 3% service chg will be added which the company charges us. Fees also may be paid with a cashiers check or money order made out to New Vocations and sent by overnight mail to 3293 Wright Rd, Laura, OH 45337. If the horse needs a coggins or health certificate there will be an additional fee for those services.

#4 Adoption contract: The Adoption Contract can be found on our website. It must be printed and signed before the horse leaves our facility. Make sure that you read the contract and understand it completely. The adoption contract may be faxed to (937) 947-3201 for horses coming from the Laura facility or to (614) 771-6992 for horses coming from the Hilliard facility.

#5 Boarding Contract: All adopters who board their adopted horse must have the Boarding Contract signed by the owner of the Boarding facility. Once signed it should be faxed to (937) 947-3201 for horses coming from the Laura facility or to (614) 771-6992 for horses coming from the Hilliard facility.

#6 Transportation: Once the adoption fee has been paid transportation should be arranged by the adopter. For seven days New Vocations will pay for the board of the horse. After seven days the adopter will need to pay $9 a day for the board of their new horse. For a list of transportation companies and individuals check out our recommended haulers page. All horses must be picked up in at least a 7 ft tall trailer, no exceptions. If you arrive with a trailer smaller than 7 ft you will not be able to haul the horse.

#7 Updates: It is required that all adopters send us two updates a year for two years. An update must include a letter or e-mail along with a current picture of the horse. Updates should be mailed to 7380 Scioto Darby Rd, Hilliard OH 43026 or e-mailed to updates@horseadoption.com .
