Standardbreds Available for Adoption

Standardbreds are quieter and more tolerant of mistakes than Thoroughbreds. These horses are accustomed to standing patiently in cross ties for hours and are satisfied to leave the premises alone. They have been bathed, shipped, and shod extensively and usually have exceptional ground manners. These horses excel on trails and do not spook easily. Standardbreds are very durable, with exceptional endurance. They can cover miles of trails with little effort. However, this breed has a well-developed trot or pace and does not canter easily without additional training. It takes some collection and occasionally a heavier shoe behind to swing them into a rack. Their trot is long and rough to sit, so posting is advised.

This is a smaller built 15h pacing gelding that is extremely quick, unusually flexible, and very athletic. He's a sound, healthy, happy horse that is fully recovered from a hind ankle injury and eager to begin a new career. Buddy needs a smaller adult that likes a quick, athletic horse with spirit. Buddy gaits and canters readily free lunging in the round pen. He's been ridden a couple of times and is light in the bridle, but is still impatient when asked to stand and wants to move. Buddy uses his hind quarters so well and is especially handy. Combine that with his little mischievious streak, and I think he would love cutting cattle or reining. He needs a friend who will help him learn new skills. I think he would really enjoy the Parelli Games and the bonding that occurs through the teaching process.

Dewey is a beautiful 15 yr old bay roan pacing gelding with black points and a beautiful head. He won $30,000 racing several seasons and was gelded and retired at age five. Dewey had been ridden on trails exclusively until about 3 years ago, in a snaffle. Since then he has been very lightly used under harness; of course, he excels at that! He has retained a very soft mouth and is easy to rate. He pulled an antique cart with metal bound wheels and even the loud crunching noise on the gravel didn’t bother him. Dewey also pulled a sleigh in the winter. He has not been under saddle much in the past 3 years. A few weeks ago, he went on a trail ride through the woods, through water and over some small jumps. Dewey does seem to like to jump. He has good form over fences, and spectacular scope, but an unconventional approach! He does not seem to want to buck, etc., and he stands readily when asked. He had only a few minor spooks on the trail ride and is very forward and willing. He has extremely comfortable gaits; lately, he has been trotting a bit more than pacing. See part two for more details.

Lo was adopted out last year, and now due to job circumstances, is up for adoption. She is currently with other STB, Spike Lee. This is a very pretty, sound, pacing mare with an exceptionally nice disposition. She raced lightly at two, then produced seven foals. Lo has been with the same family the past 12 years and comes with a glowing resume' as to her pleasant, accommodating disposition. She's by national leading broodmare sire No Nukes and out of a Bret Hanover dam. Lo has produced some very nice racehorses including a 1:52 winner of $160,000, but the racing industry in Michigan is so depressed, her owners no longer cared to breed her. Lo has been ridden by kids a few times and we roder her while at our facility a few times. Give her another horse to follow and she will be ready to go down the trail!

Spike Lee, husband's horse, ready to trail ride

We placed Spike Lee last year and now his owner is placing him up for adoption due to job circumstances. We will be placing him from his current owners home in N.Carolina. This is a super family horse that has been a childrens horse and trail ridden. He is wonderful with other horses and loves people. Spike is an exceptionally classy pacing gelding; a true "war horse" in his day. He was with his racing family for 15 yrs, but they thought Spike deserved a home where he would not only be appreciated, but enjoyed as a pleasure mount. Spike has been driven to a buggy down the road, and he's also been ridden. He has an old racing injury to a knee that should limit him to casual weekend rides or drives. Spike was ridden once, here, the first time in a couple of years. He was very solid. I feel he could make a "husbands" horse or one for less experienced friends to ride. Spike is wise and acommodating. He gets along well wherever you put him. Though, he is a woolly mammoth now, don't be deceived, Spike will be beautiful when he sheds out. Please see part 2 for more details.
