Thoroughbreds Available for Adoption

Thoroughbreds tend to be spirited, emotional horses that require an experienced, confident, and patient handler. Though these horses have been tacked and bathed hundreds of times and shipped and shod dozens more, they have only been handled by a professional. They are not accustomed to children running under their feet or sudden frantic commotions. These horses respond readily to a calm, confident person. Thoroughbreds are usually led with a chain over their nose at the track. This may not be necessary once they relax and become pleasure mounts. However, during times of stress or excitement the chain renders a more obedient, compliant horse. Thoroughbreds are very intelligent and bond with their owner/caretaker and pasture mates. They enjoy the company of other horses and are not fond of leaving the premises alone.

Aaron
Age: 2
Color: Bay
Height: 15.2h
Location: Hilliard, Ohio
Adoption Fee: $200
Suitability: Lower Level Performance
For more information:
anna@horseadoption.com
Aaron is a 2 yr old gelding who is by the famous Dynaformer. He was broke to ride over the Winter and continued to race training when it was apparent that he was not going to have the ability to race at the level his owner races at. After a vet check it was discovered that he had an old pelvic injury that was not noticeable from the outside but could be palpated. It doesn't affect him for trail riding or lower level work. However, it would if he were to race. Aaron is a fun loving guy with a typical curious 2 yr old personality. He has a nice big dressage type trot. We have not started riding him yet but he has been ridden plenty of times and will be further along than most horses his age. Aaron would be an easy project for someone. He should mature to be way over 16 hands (his sire is 17H) He has no vices. You can view a short video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qYZxltNgJ8

Adoption Fee: $200
Suitability: Pleasure Riding
For more information:

Wes is one of the flashiest stakes winner we have ever had. This gelding is by the French sire Way West and he also has Secretariat further back in is pedigree. Wes raced only 11 times and was retired in January. Since that time he has been turned out. His only injury was a fracture of the cannon bone early last year. It was surgically repaired. He was fully rehabbed and raced one more time prior to retiring. Wes simply was not the same competitive racehorse after his surgery. Wes will be suitable for pleasure riding and possibly some recreational jumping in the future. He has a good mind and is rather easy to ride. Wes doesn't require any special care other than more time to relax. He is a nice horse to handle and would be a great riding partner.

Goldy is a beautiful gelding is a grandson to the famous Forty Niner. He raced 17 times and retired in late November. Goldy has a stunning head and and neck. He has a high wither with a great shoulder and strong hind quarters. Goldy raced many times with an old knee chip. With just a short time off he has remained sound and will be fine for lower level work such as trail riding or dressage. We do not recommend competitive jumping, but he should be fine for recreational jumping on trails or occasionally in an arena. Kid From Queens
Age: 3
Color: Bay
Height: 15.3 1/2h
Location: Hilliard, Ohio
Adoption Fee: $500
Suitability: Lower Level Performance
For more information:
anna@horseadoption.com
Kid is a flashy gelding who never actually raced. Over the past year he has been in and out of race training due to a left hind suspensory injury. It was decided in March to officially retire him. He is rehabbing well and is currently able to be ridden lightly and turned out in a small paddock. Kid's prognosis for flat work is good but chances are he will not be sound enough for jumping or anything too strenuous. He would be a fun project for someone who is looking for a flashy horse to hack around and possibly show on the flat. Kid has a playful disposition and does like to be messed with. He is an extremely easy keeper and has great feet. Kid has no vices. View a short video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wv94lzCKmTE

Here is a chance to own a horse who raced in the Belmont. Hero was a very successful racehorse. He raced in the famous Belmont and Travers Stake race and won the Alydar. In just 15 races Hero won over 450,000. He was retired due to a suspensory injury over 5 years ago. Since that time he was brought back into training but never actually raced again. He was been ridden for pleasure around his owner's farm prior to comign to us. Here at New Vocations Hero has been ridden out in our large jump field. He really seems to enjoy trail riding verses ring work. He is a big stout gelding who could easily carry a larger rider. Hero has not vices and is a nice horse to work around. We hope to find him a special home where he will be admired and appreciated for all his accomplishments. View a short video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1VoSJip90o

Location: Hilliard, Ohio
Adoption Fee: $200
Suitability: Lower Level Performance
For more information:
anna@horseadoption.com
Mirific is an Irish bred Thoroughbred. He was bred, raised and raced in Ireland. Mirific was then imported as a 3 yr old to the US. He raced 70 times and won over 90K. Mirific is a sturdy guy who has been raced hard. His front legs have thickening from all of his starts but he is sound and ready to go onto his new career. Mirific would be a flashy lower level dressage or pleasure mount. He could do some recreational jumping but nothing competitive. His tail was chopped off at the track, we are not sure why but it is growing out well and is rather thick. Mirific is truly a unique gelding who has seen and done a lot during his lifetime. He is a pleasant horse to work with and has no vices. You can view a video of him at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wW7ZrXB7O6w

Navajo is a great grandson to the famous Bold Ruler. His large intelligent eyes draw you in when he looks at you. This horse has been living at the racetrack for over 10 yrs and is more than ready to retire to a less stressful career. Even though he lived at the track he was only raced an average of 7 times a year. With that said he is sound and has no apparent injuries. He has not been ridden much since he retired but it would not take long for him to adjust to pleasure riding. Navajo has a nice willing disposition. He is a true athlete and is all business when under saddle paying close attention to every cue. Navajo has no vices and gets along great with other horses. Private Coin
Age: 7
Color: Bay
Height: 16.1h
Location: Hilliard, OH
Adoption Fee: $300
Suitability: Lower Level Performance
For more information:
anna@horseadoption.com
This handsome guy has been off the track for four years. He has had two owners since his racing days. The first one trial rode him and the second one did some dressage schooling. Coin is back in the program because his adopter had a hard time with him adjusting to show life. All the commotion at shows seem to really bother him. He would much rather be a trail horse and enjoy the great outdoors. Coin's adopter did schooled him in training level dressage. She also did a lot of trail riding. Coin has even been on several over night trail rides in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. On trails he crosses water, goes over bridges, and even jumps logs with no problems. Coin would be great for dressage, trail riding, hunter paces or just pleasure riding. During the short time that he has been with us it does seem that he is happier with unstructured riding, such as trail riding. He gets a bit stubborn if worked long in the arena. He is vice free and does prefer to be turned out with other horses rather than by himself. View a short video by going to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOgKzdjufxw

Robby D
Age: 12
Color: Bay
Height: 16h
Location: Hilliard, Ohio
Adoption Fee: $0
Suitability: Companion
For more information:
anna@horseadoption.com
Rob is a true war horse. He raced 102 times and just retired iin November. Rob is slowly getting used to farm life but truly loves being in the comfort of his stall. He is riding sound but is not the easiest horse to ride. We think the 10 yrs of racing has made him a bit riding sour. He doesn't rear or buck but just bulks and doesn't want to leave the barn area. He definitively would improve with time and training. Rob would make a beautiful pasture ornament or companion for a young or older horse. He is great with other horses. Rob has no vices and is an easy keeper. You can view a short video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6gZCZ25PGw

Beautiful Mover! This gelding loves attention and is a curious fun loving 3 yr old. TD 14 times and retired due to a very small chip in his left knee. He has been consitantly sound on the knee for the last 3 months. He runs and plays just like everyone else and has not taken a lame step. We feel he should be fine for any type of flat work and possibly recreational jumping in the future. TD trot is light and fluid while coving a lot of ground. He is green but willing to learn. TD is an easy horse to work around and he gets along great with the rest of the geldings. He has no vices. You can view a short video clip of his first ride by going to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRqC-su9FWk

Zephyr is a big, mellow gentleman. He is well schooled on the flat and over fences. He knows his job and keeps a steady rythm going well to the bit. He is sound and healthy and has been the beloved show horse of a teenager who is going to college. Unfortunately on occasion he balks and rears when he has decided that he has had enough. If he doesn't succeed in intimidating his rider with this test, he goes on wtih his work in his usual, quiet rhythmic way. He can be viewed on the flat @: http://youtube.com/watch?v=CDpx6vzvCGQ and over fences at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=8JkJQgnYPes

Flashy and Sassy. Zip is an unraced gelding who is just turning 4 this year. As a two year old during a fast work out he fractured both front cannon bones. He received surgery to repair both and was given almost a whole year off. Zip made it back successfully to race training. He was at the track for several months but was not showing enough speed to actually race. He appears to be sound and his previous injuries have not bothered him. Zip should be suitable for flat work and possibly some lower level jumping in the future. He is a beautiful mover which is greatly highlighted by all his chrome. Zip is young and full of himself. Everything is a game to him on the ground and under saddle. He will need an experienced rider/trainer to help him transition into his new career. You can view a video of him on the longe as well as under saddle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ms9cejzmHPY
