Standing in the gap for retired racehorses providing a safety-net through rehabilitation, education, & placement in qualified, caring homes.

This handsome, athletic trotting gelding is back at New Vocations because his adopter can no longer afford his care and training. James Lucas has been schooled and boarded at an Eventing barn for over a year. He competed this spring in a Starter Trial and a Starter Combo Test with his 16 year old rider where he finished second. His trainer said that James Lucas needs a competent rider as he can sometimes get strong at the trot, but quiets down easily with a relaxed rider. She said he’s good on trails, loves to jump, and is learning how to canter. James Lucas has also been ridden western in a mild leverage bit. He responds well and sets his head nicely. With shoes behind and some encouragement, he could be taught to rack. James Lucas is a big bodied, sound 15.2h in his barefeet. He has a beautiful head, large intelligent eyes, and a long graceful neck. This gelding has an endearing personality and a good self image. He loves to pose for pictures! He raced ten times on the trot at two and three. He wasn’t profitable as a racehorse, but was so pretty that he got purchased as a potential Road Horse. However, after a few months training it was evident he didn’t step high enough to be competitive in that discipline. His conscientious owner sent James Lucas to New Vocations where he was adopted for Eventing. James Lucas can certainly continue in this discipline or transition to endurance or competitive trail riding, combined or pleasure driving, historical reenactment, or just about any sport where a strong, sound, athletic, horse is desired.
